South China Morning Post

quote:

A 29-year-old woman in China is being sued by her estranged parents after she refused to buy her younger brother an apartment.

quote:

Zhang has no relationship with her parents who left her to be raised by her father’s sister when she was two years old.

quote:

It was only recently when Zhang used her savings to buy an apartment for her cousin whom she grew up with, that her parents suddenly reappeared in her life.
The court ruled that Zhang has no obligation to buy property for her adult brother, however, it said that she must pay the maintenance, with the amount to be negotiated with the parents.

quote:

This is because under the Civil Code of China all adult children have a legal obligation to support their parents. This applies regardless of estrangement or abandonment.

Fortune favors those who pop out kids, tattoo "Property of Chan" on that arse, and abandon them next to rice paddy.

Strange to us, but absolutely the normal to them.

We probably have some stuff we do over here that we see as normal and they see as outrageous

It's the regardless of abandonment part that gets me.

seems like the lady could seek an offset for the 16 years of unpaid child support/care.

They aren’t trying to achieve fair; they are trying to achieve someone other than government having to pay.

Honestly most Chinese fathers wouldn’t hesitate to trade their daughters for a half a pack of Marlboros.

If this daughter doesn't like being forced to support her absentee parents then she should have thought about that before deciding to be born. Actions have consequences.
