A flight out of Shanghai to Guangzhou, China, was delayed for several hours after a superstitious passenger decided to throw a bunch of coins at the plane's engine
Daily UK
the elderly woman was spotted on the tarmac throwing coins at the plane's engine while preparing to board China Southern Airlines flight CZ380. Thankfully, another passenger spotted the 80-year-old woman and alerted the proper authorities.
According to the cops, the woman threw the coins in order to "pray for good luck."
Police detained the woman, and 150 passengers were taken off the plane while the ground crew painstakingly retrieved the good luck charms. Eight of the coins missed, but one coin was lodged into the plane's engine, which is not a good thing.
The plane did eventually take off, but it was delayed by more than five hours thanks to the woman's coin toss.

How does an 80 year old woman stroll onto a tarmac?

Boarding via a stairway on the tarmac is common in airports outside of the US.

Uhhh, many planes/airports require the passengers to walk onto the tarmac and board via a staircase.

I think he meant in more along the lines of "why wasn't anyone there making sure the passengers don't walk right up to the engines?"

Confucius say it better to use credit card for in flight movie than ask flight attendant for change.

I'm not sure what you want them to do? As someone stated, tarmac boarding and deplaning on the tarmac at international airports is pretty common. There are dozens of planes and thousands of passengers. How many people are you going to hire to keep people away? It is an open "field" where people could run in any direction. They rely on passengers knowing to head straight for the door following cones and markers, like how we rely on people following lane lines in our cars.
Thing is, in countries like this, there are many people who have no concept of air travel nor how to behave around aircraft.

You don't fly much internationally do you?

I mean you can just have one person making sure that no one wanders over to the jet engine. It's not like crowd control. It's idiot control. Just call them a "greeter" and there you go.

China is not like that but there's always the 1% of idiots who can ruin everyone's' day.

It most certainly is. China has a billion people in it, and large swaths of the country are still being modernized. For every Shanghai there are a 1,000 mud huts.
ETA: The Chinese government has to put out etiquette guides because so many of their citizens are traveling for the first time and are AWFUL.

With the exception of Hong Kong, the Asian airports I flew in/out of required you to walk across the tarmac to get to the loading stair.

I wasn't denying this. Just saying that Chinese people aren't full idiots like the guys in the ME or Africa who clean oil filters in a tub of gasoline while smoking a cigarette. The people that are flying on planes typically aren't that dumb. It's the 1% of the people who board.
