The big picture: The coronavirus pandemic has been disruptive to the lives of Americans of all ages, but for teenagers, the isolation and change in routine comes during a critical developmental stage.
The toll that staying home has taken on children's mental health is one of many reasons schools should reopen, some experts say.
By the numbers: Mental health care claim lines — or individual health services — for children 13–18 doubled in March and April of last year, compared to 2019.
In contrast, the number of overall claim lines for this age group was about half of the 2019 level.
This trend continued on through November, although less drastically.
Details: Females were much likelier to require mental health care than males.
The percentage of all medical claim lines that were for intentional self-harm nearly doubled in March and April, compared to the same month in 2019. Claim lines for overdoses increased by 94.91% in March and 119.31% in April compared to the year before. Both remained elevated through November.
The most common diagnoses in teenagers were consistently major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder and adjustment disorders. These conditions also became more prevalent, as a percentage of total medical claim lines, compared to 2019 levels.

Thanks to all the self loving people in society who value their own safety over common sense. We should've ended this nonsense months ago.

If it saves one life but ends countless others due to other reasons

I listened to an interview of a 13-year-old girl yesterday that had just moved to a new school district before this all happened and was considering suicide. She is now managing on antidepressants to keep the dark thoughts at bay, it broke my heart.

I do believe there were a bunch of people on this board (myself included) that warned about this shite about a year ago, and ever since.

But you are so selfish to not want to stay at home all the time and wear a mask.
FWIW, I let both my teenagers go out and do social things WITH groups. frick these people who say they are selfish to go out with people. I don't want them in their room watching their childhood go by for a virus that has a 99% chance of survival. I have always said if you are scared to go out then stay the frick home.

It breaks my heart and infuriates me at the same time. Because the people who are screaming to stay home have already had their childhood. They experienced their high school. They went to their prom. They cruised the strip on the weekends and did normal teenage things. Yet, they expect a bunch of kids to throw all that away and pretend like they are happy doing so because it saves grandma's life. It also saves the fatass who smokes two packs a day and has diabetes.

This does not surprise me at all. Trying times for everyone.

mental health was the main reason why the CDC and the AAP recommended back in the summer for schools open this fall

The idea of trade-offs is lost on the Twitter mob.
I'm losing faith that we'll ever learn we shouldn't make policy off social media.

I could see it with my 5 and 7 year olds. There were days where they would be crying because they missed their friends. That's why we got them back to face to face school as soon as possible.
