CHELMSFORD, Mass. (AP) -- Police in Massachusetts say a mother has been struck by her own car and seriously injured after her child accidentally put the car into reverse while she was loading the vehicle.

Chelmsford Police Chief James Spinney says the 37-year-old woman, who authorities haven't identified, is expected to survive the Sunday morning incident.

Police say the woman's 9-year-old son shifted the car into reverse while she was standing at the open driver's side front door. They say the woman tried to dive for the brake pedal, but was pinned and then run over by the vehicle.

The vehicle continued down the driveway and came to a stop after striking a rock wall opposite the house. The child wasn't injured.

Having a hard time visualizing how this happened.

Don’t bother visualizing, wake Brayden up and give it a go.

A 9-year-old should still be in a car seat. Not sure how you reach the gear shift from a car seat. Hmmm.

No can do. Braydens's sleeping with his arm iced. 78 pitches this weekend.

Pretty self explanatory to me. Shes standing next the driver's seat with the door open, kid throws it in reverse, she leans into the car towards the floor board. At that point the door would be hitting her and pushing her backwards to the ground and the front driver side tire begins to roll over her.

Pretty sad and could easily happen. Good reason to make sure youngins stay in the back seat.

When I was a kid I saw a kid from our church reverse the car while his mom was standing behind the car. She died almost instantly, I remember my dad consoling the kids and everyone freaking out. Crazy vivid memory of mine. These things happen, its unfortunate

Damn. How old was the kid? And you actually saw her get run over?

This is why our youth is getting soft. The way to properly make sure Brayden’s arm recovers is to throw long toss for an hour a day on off days. Ice is a big no no. A 9 year old’s arm needs a touch of daily trauma to one day fully mature into a big league arm.

My son put a Lincoln Town Car in forward and knocked down my dad's porch. With his baby sisters in the back seat.

My mother-in-law is "special."

Wut?
Car seats are based on your weight not your age you idiot.

Don’t you have to press the brake to shift into R? How did he manage this?

You’re absolutely right but I still can’t imagine putting a 9 year old in one. I’ve never seen it done and I’d imagine it would be highly embarrassing for the kid.

When I was a kid, I saw a Honolulu city bus run over a girl. I still remember the horrible sound as the bus tires went over her.

Back in the late seventies, my wife had the car running and stuffed for a trip to Nola from Bama. Had a 3 and a 5 yr old in the car and was to pick me up at work. 3 yr Old was in a car seat, 5 yr old strapped in the seat belt in the back seat. She remembered something she needed to get in the house after starting the car. Left it in park without EB applied. Came out to find the 5 yr old climbed in the front seat, threw it in Drive and headed down the back yard slope and slid into a small drainage ditch ending up on its side. She was able to get the 5 yr old to turn it off. 2 hours later and good work from the wrecker driver and we were on our way to Nola with just a few scratches here and there,
