Late 1894 fire burned through the fair grounds, destroying decorations and some of the temporary buildings, leaving behind the stone structures.

Good thing that city has gotten its act together and made something from all that!

What you can't see in the pictures is all the bullets flying around.

All of this was destroyed, as it we're told it was only built to last a few months.

Nowhere mentioned that the water tower was the only thing to survive the fire

Erik Larson - The devil in the white city. Great book about the Chicago worlds fair and the "temporary" amazing city and a serial killer that posed as a Dr during the same time frame.

I think it's odd these amazing and grand structures were built in such a troubled and limited time period for a few months of amusement with the intention to demolish shortly after.

Agree, You would think they could build with a long term plan and multiple functions.

I question the narrative that all of these buildings in all of these cities were built temporarily during this late 1800, early 1900 time period.
I'll say more as I share more.

Right. we were there just a few weeks ago touring the city for our first time. We did the architecture tour as well as visit the Field Museum on bikes, riding up and down the Lakefront area. Most of the Worlds Fair structures were part of the "White City" and not meant to be permanent.
The Palace of Fine Arts(now the Field Museum) was one of the permanent structures. The other is now the Art Institute(down by the BEAN) at Adams@Michigan. These structures are absolutely gorgeous.

You sure got that right.

I'm up to speed on the official narrative -- I find it puzzling when I think about this amount of resources and grandeur invested at this time period in many cities across the world for temporary amusement.

Really great book about that fair and a serial killer that was plucking people off during it.

Fun fact: While Chicago is indeed windy, the Windy City nickname actually came about due to the boastful nature of the city’s residents and politicians, particularly during their bid to host the 1894 Worlds Fair.

Most of those structures were temporary for the World's Fair. Chicago wanted to upstage Paris, so they had the best architects and designers in the world designing all of those temporary structures.
There is one permanent structure in place today.

It's understood that's the official narrative for these buildings, and the many incredible buildings around the world that were supposedly built to be temporary.
