How is Huntersville? I live in Ballantyne, and although it's a great place to raise a family, I wouldn't recommend it for anyone single (unless you are wanting to go MILF hunting). Belmont is actually not bad if you have a family (small town usa type downtown with restaurants/bars, close to the airport), but Gaston county as a whole isn't where you want to be.

As has been said, the Dilworth area is a great place. I loved Charlotte, great city. Easy to get away to the mountains for a weekend when you want to get out of town too.
That hospital is a really good place too. A lot of good people and a ton of benefits that you won't get at most residencies. Good luck to yall, it'll be an interesting year
ETA: just saw Chitown's post and that's pretty much spot on. I don't have anything to add to that.

How is Huntersville? .
Definitely not a party town. Lots of young couples with kids 5 and under. Not the best place to parrr-taay. Does have crafty beers though.
Huntersville has affordable housing except for Vermillion (no clue why but houses are crazy high in there).
I lived over by the lake on the west side of Huntersville. Had trees and woods around us which is difficult to find up there.
Northlake is convenient, but traffic always always always sucks.

Agree with badger here. I rented in Dilworth right out of college and loved it.

Depends on the lifestyle you want and the price you want to pay. Ive been in Bemont for 20 years. Love it- 15 min drive to anywhere in Charlotte if I feel the need. I was in Clt for a few years and left.

Went through the same thing, wife did her residency at CMC and we were there for 4 years. We lived in Huntersville and I commuted to Belmont for work. Huntersville is a great place. Nice mall and it's great to be near the lake. There are tons of outdoor things, hiking, biking, etc. Make sure you check out the whitewater center. Great place. As far as living, if you don't have kids and need more space, rent. Don't know how the housing market is now but when we were moving was when the market crashed. It's a lot easier to end your lease than sell a house in my opinion. Another bit of advice is to find someplace that's comfortable because getting really anywhere isn't too bad traffic wise. Make sure to eat at Cantina 1511

I lived in Charlotte for 6 years and lived in Mt. island lake area. I really enjoyed that part of town because I was so close to the lake and had great fishing access to the Catabwa river and Mt Island lake. Denver is not a bad area of your wanting to get further away from town. Concord is a mess during race weeks, Huntersville is nice and so is some places around Lake Norman. South Park is nice but not for me.

Whitewater Center is the shite. They have running/mountain bike trails, climbing walls, ziplining and ropes course, kayaks, SUPs, whitewater rafting, and more. During summer they have free weekly concerts, great place to throw down a blanket with your girl and drink some beers, hear some tunes, and people watch. LINK
All of the neighborhood advice here is spot on. Lots of options if you are into dining/nightlife/"urban" feel in South End, Dilworth, Plaza-Midwood, Noda. (The first two have higher end/fratty crowds, last two have more arty/hippy/hipster crowds) More small town vibe and families with kids up by the lake, but still lots to do. South Park and Ballantyne are real nice but maybe a few years down the road for your demographic.
Uber is plentiful and cheap so you can still live out a bit and hit the bars weekly if you want. Real estate market never really dropped in the hot areas, lots of cheaper options to buy in the cookie cutter hoods around the 485 loop. Thousands of new condos/apts to rent in the hot neighborhoods as well as small older homes.

The housing market in Huntersville, Cornelius, Davidson, etc. is doing pretty well right now. We sold our house for $17k more than what we paid. Bought the house in September 2012, sold it in February 2015.
Renting is really really high around those parts right now.
Places to eat:
Kyle's BBQ (we usually sat under the LSU sign on the ceiling),
Lancasters is shite btw
Cabo Fish Taco
Yoshi's
Cafe 100
131 Main (Pricey but excellent)
Davinos Pizza in Mooresville
There's a slew of places in the city that I don't feel like typing; however, you can pretty much say goodbye to your cajun cuisine. Bordeaux's in meh. Cajun queen is meh.

Thanks for all the advice, it backs up a lot of my assumptions about where to look for housing. We don't know if we want the Uptown city feel or something a little more laid back...We're going to look at both when we go up there in a couple weeks.
Want to be close to CMC, so Dilworth/South Park area is first option.
Anyone have anything good/bad to say about the Cotswold/Stonehaven area? Found a few houses for lease in that area..
I would love to live further out near the water, but just don't think it's worth the commute.
