When I was growing up in the 80s and 90s AIDS was constantly in the news. Today it's barely even talked about. If Charlie is indeed Hiv positive, this would be the first time in forever I can recall someone disclosing they are infected.

Because, the stories have been circulating for years, and really amped up the last year or so - the "AIDs" thing isn't really much of a surprise at this point. The damaging allegations are his seemingly reckless indifference towards the safety of others.
He should just say he is gay and really progressive and all will be forgiven.
