It's not the fricking time to "play the gotcha game" by bringing up something a radical right winger person did. This isn't tit for tat. These are real people with real families that will be absolutely devastated by this. Two young children will grow up without a father and a young mother now shoulders the heavy burden of raising a young family without her husband.....all because someone disagreed with one of his viewpoints. It's disgusting regardless of which side it comes from.
But there are a few in this thread, you included, that believe it's appropriate to point to other instances of political violence as if to excuse this. You (and the other posters doing it) are not fooling anybody. You are okay with it, you just know you can't come out and directly say it. It's sick and completely inappropriate.

My brother and his husband went to a Trump rally and Charlie was there as well. They posted some pictures on Instagram and the replies from so called friends of there's was something out of a frickin YouTube or reddit comment section. The modern left has lost its mind. Rip Charlie Kirk. This is very sad

I'd wager the largest portion of people either vote due to what their close family and friends vote as well as also not being very politically engaged, especially in comparison to posters on a message board.
You could argue that the Northeast liberals who have run the Democratic Party since the end of WW2 have always been more progressive than their voter base but used the fact that the US has big tent parties rather than a parliamentary system allow them to retain power even if their policies were unpopular broadly. But that is a discussion for another day.

The fact that many in this thread are actually having political arguments is extremely disheartening. It’s a clear sign of where we are as a country.
