Cooling the package compartment would be a huge benefit to the driver. Even if it’s just to the ambient temperature. In my opinion this is the only place that heat becomes an issue. In a perfect world a driver should be in and out of the back as the packages are theoretically loaded in sequential order. Unfortunately, they are not always in the right place and a driver can spend 3 to 5 minutes looking for a package in 125° temperatures.

Not really sure who he is or his reputation but he is dead wrong on all accounts on this one.

My driver has been driving for 27 years. He's in damn good shape. I'd say no A/C is working

Nothing is free homie.
You think UPS is going to just eat the bill for all the AC units and then of course, leaving the ACs on full blast all day in non-air tight vehicles?
No my friend, that cost will be passed down to the consumer.
frick these bitches. Next ditch diggers will begin demanding personal cooling and misting stations.
You want a nice AC'd job? Apply for one dumbfrick.

UPS drivers are union.
They've been negotiating deals through the union for decades.
If this was a big deal, the union would have given up some of the other demands for the A/C.
Obviously, this is low on the union's punch list.
Instead of bitching to UPS. Bitch to the Union.

Yeah, but 95% of the time the driver is in and out in seconds. Your average driver isn't going going to spend more than 20-30 minutes over the course of a day fine sorting the load unles the pre-loader is a complete idiot. Granted, I left UPS 15 years ago so when you say "looking for a package" it's because UPS's system now tells them their next stop and which packages are in the load. When I was there, we didn't have that. By the way, WTF did they call that system? I know they sank about $3 billion into it.

And of course let’s not forget that more than half of the fleet lacked power steering and was a manual shift. fricking p800’s !! I’m sure you’ve probably been behind the wheel of a P 500 from time to time… Even worse. Running residential neighborhoods and pulling 75 3-4 point turns in 95° will kick your arse. I don’t give a shite who you are that will wear you out. People think this job is a piece of cake..... Most would not last a month. I’ve seen too many people who have loaded trucks for three or four years just waiting to get a drivers job only to quit 2 to 3 weeks in because they couldn’t handle it.

I drove a P-800 for 3 years with no power steering then got one with power steering. Drove a nice P-700 my last 4-5 years. But that didn't help with shifting a manual transmission for 11 years. I don't have full range of motion in my right shoulder.

What you are describing is fed ex… Ground… Home delivery… Custom critical. UPS owns every single last one of its vehicles and services them accordingly
ok i must have got the company mixed up, i know the drivers were telling me about it. those trucks cost around $75k and thats an insane investment just to get the job.
Posted on 8/23/18 at 8:27 pm to keakar
I went and talked with someone at Fed ex prior to working at UPS. They made promises that you will make the same money as a UPS driver. While that is true what they don’t tell you is that you will pay for things like, your truck, your gas, your insurance, your retirement, your health insurance, and forget overtime because you’re an independent contractor. It’s a shitty deal that people that don’t have a lot of other options take. By the time it’s all said and done you’re making about 5 bucks an hour if you’re lucky.

I take it that you yourself have had a job driving a box truck. It’s freaking brutal mid June-September

I didn't always but that's beside the point. Unfortunately it took UPS a long time to phase out the vehicles with straight gear shift sticks with the bent sticks that you didn't have to extend your arm out in order to shift into the higher gears.

The USPS is using 1980's Grumman LLVs with no AC.
My mailman had installed a small plane AC in his. (Looks like ice chest with a fan.and tubes)

What about them?
quote:Are they going to start asking for AC out in the heat? Point is, there are plenty of people working out in the heat and work in much harsher conditions than some UPS driver who just drives around all day and grabs boxes out of the back of the truck. Yet you don't see those people bitchin and moaning and starting a petition to get ac.
What about them?

It’s really a damn shame they want to make waves over something that is not a need. How do you think they carried mail before AC? They really have a lot of nerve.

Blasting the AC with the door wide open doesn't really make sense.
Well, if they had A/C the door would probably stay shut.
But you're hopping in and out of that truck all day anyway, so I don't see that much point to having A/C.
