So basically they are guaranteeing the servers make the "same" income as they would with tips, except now there is no incentive. All at the cost of the individuals you are in business for to begin with...the customer.
Makes a whole lotta sense
It's their business though and I respect their right to run it how they want. The market will react in kind however.

Danny Meyer has always been a trend setter. Disallowed smoking in his restaurants 10 years before Manhattan did. He is probably onto something here.

I know it's not a restaurant, but I always tip at Starbucks and the ones in target and Barnes & noble absolutely will not accept tips

This will be an interesting experiment.
A lot of the anti tipping posters should watch and see how this goes.
It may work at high end establishments but I have my doubts about it working at any mid priced places.

I mean, how difficult is it to know which situations are ones where tipping is socially expected?

Exactly. I don't understand why restaurants are able to pay less than minimum wage and expect the customer to just randomly decide how much the service was worth. It's not even completely based on their performance, a lot of people don't differentiate between food and service.

I've never worked as a server but I've eaten out enough and come in contact with enough of the general public to know it's not an easy job and to appreciate it
