No. But since they're the ones initiating this practice here, I'd imagine that they'll be pretty strict about no tipping

I tip. 20 to 30% depending on service and my BAC. I don't necessarily agree that it's the ideal method.

Really? The USA has probably 8 to 12 restaurants in the top 50 in the world. I'm pretty sure the other 42-38 have some damn good service.

Clearly there are differences in the higher end arena but as long as tipping is customary in the US.. The motivational incentive of a potential big tip can increase the customer experience. I'f the no tipping initiative takes hold and tipping is considered odd across the country then the pay scale will reflect the level of service expected.. I'm of the opnion that we won't see the overal shift to non tipping.

Are you seriously trying to compare nursing to the service industry?

What makes the service industry special little snowflakes? If job security and a decent wage doesn't motivate you to perform, I'm not sure what a $5 tip is going to do.

Point is that people work in the service industry because they can make more in tips than they would an hourly wage there. This gives them the incentive to give the best service they can possible and bust their arse....cause they know better service means better tips.

I was making around $200 at least a night working as a cocktail waitress in tips....back in 2000. That is $25/hr for an 8 hour shift. You really think restaurants are gonna start paying servers $25/hr?

Somehow, someway, every other industry seems able to maintain customer service without tips.

If those restaurants lose quality servers they'll either start paying the market value or suffer the consequences. Almost the entire world manages to have a quality restaurant industry without forcing its customers to subsidize cocktail waitresses pulling down $25 an hour.

Like someone else posted, I just don't see the culture ever changing to a completely non tipping environment in this country.

I agree with you, there. Tipping culture is here to stay and only growing bigger.

Which is what a lot of people don't realize. They presume servers automatically get 15-20%. I believe the good waitstaff will realize they will be guaranteed to make the amount instead of waiting on a 4 top of whiners and complainers hoping they don't get stiffed.

It is stability.

I don't mind tipping tbh. Doesn't really bother me to tip, as long as it is a socially accepted service I'm tipping for(eating out, getting my hair done, bringing my dog to groomers, etc).

What gets annoying is going to fast food or similar type places that have a tip jar out. Got a sandwich from Jersey Mike's the other day and when I swiped my debit card the screen asked me if I wanted to leave a 10,15, or 20% tip. See...now that is ridiculous imo.

Yep. That's exactly right. I'm all for tipping for be waited on. I really hate the tip jars, and receipts from counter service places that have a tip line. It's just an awkward annoyance.

For example Izzos - I stand in line, tell you exactly what I want when I finally get to the register, pay, go fill my drink, walk back up to the counter to get my food, refill drink when needed, bus my own table then leave. Who the hell am I tipping??

Like what exactly? Most sales jobs are commission based...which is just another performance bonus that motivates the employee..yes.base salary is nice but most people take jobs with a performance based bonus one way or another..thats all.a tip is...its why you get better service at a strak house than you mcdonalds
maybe you mean wal-mart? Awesome customer service you get there and the clientele is top notch. Go buy a suit from Walmart and get the staff to help you try it on. Or do you really think the employee at the suit store is trying so hard just because? Them selling that suit gets them that bonus and they kiss your arse and do whatever it takds to get the sale for that tip
Can you name an industry that thrives with 0 incentives? State workers have a hourly pay thats same no matter what...but we complain about how long it takes govt employees to do simple things.

I get your point but I disagree that a server is like most sales jobs. Typically, when you sit down at a restaurant you aren't there to window shop. You are going to order something. Waiters take orders, they don't really hard sell you the food.

Many people ask waiters what they recommend and if restaurant is worth a flip they have to know everything about every dish. How they describe it cab most certainly effect restauranr sales and how they sell themselves to you makes you decide if they are worth paying for and how much was their service worth to you.

Waiters are selling themselves as soon as they walk in to work if they are worth a damn. Their demeanor when not even at a table can cause someone tp think they are a bitch or a dick and effect their perceived worth without the first word

I have hd absolute shite service and not tipped before but you have to be baaaaad for that to happen. Just worked around general pub in some type of service role to know how big of dicks most people are to not take care of people who actually care

And you better believe that they will still accept tips. It will be like, "You don't have to tip, but you can if you want to...wink, wink."

Didn't see that

I think that not enforcing a zero tolerance policy will negate everything

They can enforce it if they want, but they don't and they won't. All they have to do, if the customer insists, is asked them which charity they would like it sent to. And if the server is caught pocketing the tip, they would be fired. But this won't happen because they are counting on these tips to help their BS plan work.
