My son graduates medical school in May. He would tell you to take the most fiscally sound option for undergrad. It’s all about the MCAT. He could have went to BU, Duke, UTa, or Vandy for undergrad but took the free ride to LSU instead. Save your money so you can help a little with med school to keep her loans smaller.

Or you can go to medical school in the Caribbean and not even have to take the MCAT.

$12,000 a year isn’t much money at all. I’d pay that to go to Centenary over Northwestern State. It’s objectively a better school in terms of academics. She’ll have smaller classes, she’ll be surrounded with better students, collectively, and she’ll have access to LSUMC-Shreveport. Not that this really means much, but looking at each school’s endowment/financial health, NSU is at $20,000,000, and Centenary is at $120,000,000. I’m not sure if that’s something to take into account, but perhaps Centenary has better professors, labs, clinics, school resources and so forth? Both are really hood, but I’d rather live in Shreveport as opposed to Natchitoches. There’s more to do.

NSU is a solid school and would be a good foundation for post graduate.

Getting out of undergrad debt free is very important.

NSU has a shite ton of first generation college students and a pretty low overall gpa. I know people that went there that ended up doing more than fine, it’s of course possible, but it is objectively not a solid school.

I would not want my kids surrounding themselves with a large part of the NW enrollment

She has been accepted to the NSU Scholors College. Not sure if that makes a difference...
with who she will be surrounded by.

My son was considering swimming at centenary. We toured the campus and it was really run down but they were pouring money into the athletic facilities. At the time he wasn’t interested in medicine but they have an agreement with lsu Shreveport med school. I think if they finish the pre med program with a certain gpa they are guaranteed an interview or something like that.

I don’t think it matters too much where you go to undergrad as long as your MCAT score is good

MCAT
GPA
Get involved with the school

I was the president of the pre med club and the president of tri beta (the biology honor society at NSU).

Medical schools want you to be smart but also able to work with people, from patients to nurses to hospital administrators.

I remember the dean of student affairs at LSU HSC Shreveport (or whatever it’s called now) once told a group of applicants when asked about extracurricular activities, “I want y’all to go out there and try to sell used cars.” I think what he was saying was that he wanted students, future doctors, that knew how to work with people from all walks of like, from the crack head on the street to the governor.

For college she is considering Pre-Med.
You should do all you can to talk her out of this.

If that fails, you should at least want her to go to a decent med school. Neither of these will accomplish that.

3 pages of posts from current doctors seem to disagree with you. Want to explain your take?

Harvard on the Bayou has a 95% acceptance rate to med school. Thats what the recruiters told my daughter last year when she considering pre med at Nicholls.

Seems suspect. Sure there weren’t anymore qualifiers on there? Maybe the honors program?

Other posters have made most points I would make. I guess if she wants to be surrounded by mediocre students and then go to a mediocre medical school, it's perfectly suitable.

LSU med isn't even ranked anymore.

I really agree with the poster who pointed out the intangible benefits of operating in an environment of other non-mediocre students. Did the OP say this child had a 34 on her ACT? If so, then let her have some real aspirations. Stop trying to cheap out by forcing a decision between two, frankly, lousy colleges in NW LA. The average SAT score at Centenary is 1030! 1030 would be like an ACT of 20ish. 20 IRL would be like talking to a dummy. Why would anyone want their daughter with ability to go spend all their time in the company of dummies?

I firmly believe you need to pick the right place for the kid. At which one will she most likely thrive? Where will she get better grades? Where will she be happier living and social life?
