Cell phones aren't to blame, they are just a tool. What has ruined humanity is people, businesses, and corporations constantly plotting to suck every single dime possible out of your pocketbook. That's what has eliminated …

Just wait until the world is full of people who have never not had one.

No, just reminiscing about a time when some many adventures were available without someone trying to charge me for everything.
With targeted advertising, as a result of someone weaponizing my phone, its now a constant barrage of selling. Even to the point where they are listening in on you at all times.

It has made a lot of things better, but has made socializing a whole World different. I find myself doing it too and hate myself for it. Checking scores instead of enjoying the movie with my GF. Looking at the rant while she's talking about something I don't care about for twenty minutes(she can ramble though man...Jesus).

My sister-in-law documents her entire life on Facebook. Every new thing she buys, every meal she eats, birthday party or occasion for her own daughter, she is constantly filming the whole thing rather than just being there in the moment. It drives me bananas

All voluntary transactions. Self restraint prevents feeling this way

I agree with a lot in here but there is some over dramatizations in here also. Overall I don’t stare at my phone too much except for when I’m sick I can be bad about it, or really tired if I had a rough night at work but adrenaline still flowing I can lay in bed with it and that’s when my post count here goes up tremendously. I think young people still socialize just like we use to (I’m pushing 40).
Honestly people my age are probably the worst about being on their phones all the time. Ive seen many times going out to eat, a big table full of adults and teenagers, most of the time it’s the adults playing on their phones the entire time. Seems, at least in my opinion, the young folks are better apt at limiting their cell phone usage. Obviously there are still some young folks that don’t, but overall it’s the older folks who now live their lives through a screen, in my opinion.
ETA: I definitely limit my time on phone with my kids around. My side job I need to keep it on me in case a customer calls so during the summer weekdays when kids are home and I still need my phone on me, I can slip up and get interested in something while kids are home. On weekends I seldom touch it when home or at night, I’m at work today though.
ETA 2: As soon as I type out I don’t spend much time on phone I see I have almost 8,000 post on a message board, geez. Fortunately this is my main website I visit, other than that it’s a windshield group on Facebook and not much else.

Smart phones? Yes.
Cell phones? No.
Cell phones? No.

Kind of like the whole gun argument, smart phones didn’t do this. People using smart phones ruined themselves.

Take the no phone challenge.

Nope, just made it better for everyone else. When killing is popular, you have less to kill.

At the least they’ve given everyone ADD.
The Police had a song “Too Much Information” that is way more applicable now than back then.

But you had a phone back then, right? I think his point is that there isn't anything stopping a person from dropping in unannounced today that wouldn't have stopped them in 1989.
The thread title is about ruining humanity but going from dropping in unannounced to having the decency to reach out beforehand is a win for humanity IMO.
To each his own, but I think it's pretty odd to view people NOT showing up unannounced as something you miss about the old days. F that.

Paradoxically, the technology that allows us to be connected 24/7 has made us less social. We communicate often in short bursts, saying nothing of substance to each other, instead of spending an hour or so together less frequently and enjoying company and old fashioned conversation.
Only if you have shitty friends or suck at communicating.

Even the cops are addicted, saved me a ticket.Couple weeks ago I rolled through stop sign like it was a yield sign,I didn’t see trooper sitting there. Not to worry,he was looking at his cellphone, didn’t see me.Yesterday,I saw city cop sitting in parking lot on side of street ,head down staring at his phone.

"Cheers" set in 2019 would be a boring show. People would sit at the bar and look at their cell phones.
Noticed this while in Chicago and hitting several bars and taprooms. No one was talking, even people who came in together. Order a drink and get out phone.

Depends on your personality. My wife and I usually end up talking to everyone in the bar.
There definitely are people glued to their phones in those places, but not everyone. Most will glance occasionally, send snaps, text, etc, but not just buried in the phone the whole time. Those people are weird.
