But the thing is, I still don't know where I am with google maps. With a real map I can see to whole area and get the lay of the land.
Just zoom out baw
But I agree with the OP, I'll find myself sitting down to watch a show or game on TV and missing most of it cause I'm playing on my phone. Seems ironic that the TV used to be the "time waster" now just watching it seems somehow quaint.

Depressing thread is depressing. But it's the truth.

Get off of the OT, turn off your phone, and go live.

You are correct. 100% correct. I was thinking about this today, and I’m guilty of some of the things you listed as well. In a nutshell...
It’s absolutely pathetic that we need grocery store apps so we can have curbside pickup. It’s awful that so many things are ‘interactive’ now and require cell phone use. Our jobs are getting more reliant upon connectivity when we are at home.
We will be expected to do work off the clock. It’s bad enough when someone emails me after hours wanting something to be done by morning.
This is stuff for my generation. The kids? They’re fricked.

Also, this isn't just millennials. I was at the Rolling Stones concert in NOLA last month and there were tons of old boomer types watching the entire concert on their phone screen. It was pathetic really.
I even saw one trying to Shazaam a Rolling Stones song live. It was some kind of really common, well known track like Brown Sugar or something... and he kept repeatedly trying to Shazaam it.
Shouldn’t you have been enjoying the concert, Alanis Morisette?

My kids love hearing stories of how my wife and I managed to make it through college without a cell phone. How did y’all meet your friends? Well, we made plans ahead of time and met somewhere.

I once say a husband and wife come to a restaurant for lunch. They sat down and never said a word to each other the whole time. Both looking at their phones.
What is sadder is that parents ignore their kids instead of nurturing and teaching them. That's what is really sad.

You sound very insightful and wise beyond your years.

Ive seen that so many times. i was watching a golf event a few weeks back and Rory was walking to a tee box by a huge gallery and 90% of them were filming him walk by. Just walk by
What the frick do people do with all these insignificant videos? They cant even enjoy the moment without trying to make a shitty amateur video.
10 mins after the event, there will be professional videos out there to grab if you need them. Try to just enjoy the moment

Almost every time someone is in the left lane driving 10 miles under the speed limit, they are on their cell phone either texting or talking. It's their world and they are either dumb or oblivious to how this thing works. I wish there was a law that no cell phones can be used by the driver while driving period. People can't hardly think for themselves these days and "think" they need interaction with others via facebook, snapchat etc.... every second of the day. It's pitiful to watch.

What chaps my arse is watching fans at sporting events. They occupy a seat but do not watch the game or cheer for their team. Taking selfies to send to people and brag about being at the game (that they're not watching).
Give me those tickets. I'll watch every minute and scream my head off. I refuse to get a smart phone. I carry an old fashioned flip phone like Karl Malone in case I need to call 911.

bullshite OP. I have the ability to control my thermostat at home while sitting in my office thereby keeping my wife from turning up the heat to 72 degrees in the winter time.
I love my cell phone.

Emoticons. Only kids should use them.

nothing says f... you, I "mistakenly believe I'm" important like this.
Fixed this for you.
Two things I've noticed with adults and young people:
1. A group of people or family will go out to dinner or an event and ignore everyone they are with and play on their phones.
2. Take someones phone from them for a while and many will become almost paranoid until they get it back. Even if they know its not lost. They are physically/mentally addicted to it.

Same here - I'm 52 and no smart phone for me. Flip phone all the way. I follow the rant from a lap top when I'm in the mood.

And will probably be the root cause of why it ends one day.

Cell phones provide a world of information at our fingertips
Cell phones also provide a world of propaganda and misinformation at our fingertips
Technology is also having terrible social implications.
Its a blessing and a curse. Unfortunately most people are incapable of harnessing the positive.

I graduated from high school 50 years ago. If someone would have told me then that 50 years later I would be waling around with a computer in my pocket that was more powerful than the one that put a man on the moon and could give me the answer to most questions I have almost instantly, I would have said, "you are crazy".
The smart phone is amazing. But it comes with drawbacks. Human interaction has lessened in those growing up with them (and those of my age who have them out 24/7). Instant gratification is the norm now - there is at least a generation of people who have never heard a busy signal on a phone.
The thing that I dislike most about smart phones is the inability to "hide out". It used to be when I was in trial my secretary would tell people who called that I was in trial and would be unavailable during business hours for 3-4 days (after court I could hang out in one of the Georgetown bars knowing folks could not get me). Now, when I get out of court this device in my pocket has voice mails, emails, and texts which need responses. I miss the days of being able to "disappear" for a while.
