This needs to stay once the panic is over.

Motorists who do not have an active toll tag and intend to use cash must use Lane 3 and will be sent an invoice in the mail for the price of the toll.
No cash payments will be accepted at the toll booth.

The causeway is so far behind in toll technology it’s not even laughable.

so instead of collecting $5, they are going to exchange mailing information?

Lord, I would hope they would use a camera scanner to get the license plate, and send a bill to the owner of the vehicle, like every other toll system in the country, and like the red light / speed cameras do.

They’ve had this capability and are just now using?

its just dumb invoicing an owner of the vehicle instead of the person driving.

You want to know why? Because the entire thing is a LA political slush fund scam of the first order.
The toll takers and Causeway Police have their own retirement systems and make a shite load of money. There was a news article years ago exposing what some of their people are pulling down as pensions and nothing happened.
Nepotism and six figure pensions for toll takers. Think about how much money that bridge generates. Where does it all go? They don't want to modernize the toll system.

That’s what people in Dallas have been saying about the Causeway for years.

just put in frickin card swipes and do it all with credit/debit cards, you dont even need attendants then, just swipe and gate opens
permanently cut work force down by 90% with just a skeleton crew in case something breaks down and you need to repair a card reader

They really are.
Why even have tollbooth attendants?
There are a poorly-run, overstaffed, ridiculous pork barrell of an organization.

You don’t need traffic to stop to swipe cards. People can just purchase a toll tag or be billed monthly (at a higher rate) like the rest of the 1st world cities.

for people who arent crossing regularly you do
not everyone crosses it every single day to be paying yearly or monthly for it

That’s not how it works. Just go through the toll and pay your bill when you get it in the mail.

When the bond was voted on for that bridge it was supposed to have been paid off in I believe, 20 years. Concerned citizens of st. Tammany did the math on it and that bridge should have been paid off 3X over already.
In other words, the bridge should be free.
Should have been free my entire life and I'm almost 40. The whole thing as a fricking scam. Then they raised the tolls to add emergency lanes. You think those tools are going to come back down? frick no.
They keep redirecting all the funds to other pet projects in St Tammany and Jefferson.
Just like with the Crescent City Connection, people need to bich about it and stop buying the propaganda that the bridge is going to fall into the fricking water. There are bridges all over this state that operate just fine. There's no reason for there to be a toll on the causeway.

In Texas, when a toll road is paid off, they keep the toll and use it for maintenance, and to provide seed money for additional toll roads.
If they purely used the toll money for that (including the emergency lanes) I would be fine with it.
But no, it's a slush fund for overpaid bridge cops, officials, and used for non-toll-bridge-road things.

Should go to toll by plate, save money not paying toll takers. Florida is doing this.
