We used to get extra credit for cheating in construction management. It was called networking points. Could usually bump you at least a letter grade.

It's refreshing to see when someone tells the truth up front that they don't get the book thrown at them.
Courts could take a lesson here. When someone shows up and admits fault, don't say "I'm bound by law to give you the max". Cut them more slack than you would someone who lawyers up and makes a deal.
