Not a good look

A new report released Tuesday reveals that, over the past eight years, the Catholic Church has spent $10.6 million in the northeastern United States to fight legislation that would help victims of clergy sexual abuse seek justice. "At the most basic level, we were inspired by frustration," says attorney Gerald Williams, a partner at Williams Cedar, one of four law firms that jointly commissioned the report. "We represent hundreds of people, who have truly been victimized by clergymen in the Catholic Church. We've heard a lot about the church's desire to be accountable and turn over a new leaf. But when we turn to the form where we can most help people and where we can get the most justice — the courts of justice — the church has been there blocking their efforts."

quote:

In New York, for example, the Catholic Church spent $2,912,772 lobbying against the Child Victims Act, which Governor Andrew Cuomo ultimately signed into law on February 14, 2019. The act gives survivors more time to seek justice against their abusers, increasing the age at which victims are able to sue from 23 to 55.

quote:

They make a lot of positive statements, but when the Church literally puts its money where its mouth is, it's on the side of self-protection and not help for the survivors," Williams told CBS News. "I believe the church has a long way to go to show that it stands with survivors. I believe that these data indicate that it's not standing with the survivors, that in fact it's standing against the survivors." The data in the report is based entirely on public filings in the individual states of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island. And Williams believes it's "likely" that at least some of the money used by the Catholic Church to combat extending the statute of limitations for survivors came from Sunday collections from the faithful.

The church is CORRUPT. The current pope is very likely the anti-christ.

What!?

“Man, for some reason, I feel the need to sue the church for that thing that happened back in 1968. What is that? The priest is now dead? Wow, I guess you’ll just have to take only my world for it for $14 million in punitive damages “

Catholic Church can't get out of their own way.

Until someone takes charge and turns the whole place upside down they will continue to lose respect.

I think they should be held accountable, but let’s play devil’s advocate.

Someone in NY is 50 and says a priest (now dead) molested him when he was 7. Church has no defense since the alleged perp is dead, loses multi-million dollar lawsuit

Not a great position to be in if you’re the church

Pretty valid counterpoint. Can’t really argue with it except to say that the church opened themselves up to this level of scrutiny when they failed to take action on such egregious crimes before.

As a catlick I agree. I’m not against the victims being compensated and the priests going to prison, but that NY law in particular leaves them open to a bunch of bullshite lawsuits

frick them. There are thousands of priests who have gotten away and lived lives of impunity because the church would just move them around to avoid scrutiny and accountability. So frick them if they lose millions of dollars in a lawsuit.

And I am a practicing catholic. Not like it matters....

Even if the case is bullshite? I’m all for true victims getting compensated, but frick people just trying to get a free payday

So the church is not in favor of vastly changing the penalties for past crimes?

And the law firm that would receive by far the most financial benefit of such a change is "frustrated"?

Color me fricking shocked.

The article and attorney implies the church is in favor of a change benefitting themselves. Thats the opposite of reality in this case

Make me pope for a day, and I will end this once and for all.

I don't care if there is a priest shortage in the ranks. You will remain a priest until convicted of a crime. Once you are convicted, your confession will be heard, and then you will be forgiven but defrocked. We don't need pedo priests in the clergy. I will also reverse the discipline of priestly celibacy. Priests will be allowed to marry and have children. Gay marriage amongst priests, however, will not be tolerated.

Exactly. The Church covered this up for far too long. Plus , imagine being a victim of a weirdo dude raping you in the 60s, 70s, 80s and even 90s. Now discussion is mainstream but back then? People kept that shite to themselves painfully.

It’s difficult to keep up the faith while others constantly point out all of your faults and failures.

The Catholic Church is built by human hands and we’re all sinners. You can find evidence of evil in nearly every aspect of life, I choose to try to focus on the good. I often fail but I try.

I hope the Catholic church and the Vatican burn to the MF'ing ground then the purists can rise from the ashes and rebuild.

The CC is a freaking disgrace and should be disbanded.

I say this as a church going Catholic. They are frauds.
