Then why does the canal go all the way to Jeff Davis?
Does Lafitte pump to the North Broad station that pumps into Orleans Canal then drains into the lake?
What is being reported by the media doesn't seem to line up with the system map I posted.
If you follow the drainage basins, it seems like Lafitte (which doesn't have a pump station on it) drains into the Orleans canal on the west side of Bayou St John, then flows into the pump station on Orleans Ave canal (the one that sits close to I-10 near Marconi Ave) and then out to the lake.
Hopefully someone with actual knowledge of the system can chime in. But the Broad St station seems to have a different coverage zone.

$50 says they damage the culvert and have to close the road for repair.

$100 bucks says the S&WB is going to be forced to close the road for several months because they will tear up the street to gain access to this obstruction. The only way for this obstruction to be cleared is by a bulldozer. The cars are just a small part of the problem.

yeah, I figured it out....it does drain to the Orleans Ave pump station into the Orleans ave canal out to the lake

You have to consider that is a decent possibility.
Now consider that this likely isn't the only underground canal with an issue.
WTF didn't they install some sort of grate system where the open-air portion meets the underground portion?
Part of watching this is fascinating, part of this is maddening.

I just want to know how not one, but two cars got in there. The open air portions still have concrete slats going across them and it's not like there are ramps down to the canals

Hmmm...that analysis looks pretty racist

Are the slats on the entire length of the open-air portion?
I used to work near there but don't anymore. I have half a mind this weekend to go get a poboy from Parkway and then go look at it all myself.

Jeff Adelson
@jadelson
Minor update on theculvert cars. S&WB officials say they ran the license plate of at least one car by NOPD, which did not have a record of it being stolen.
"To give a sense of how far into the canal this car ended up:
This photo was taken above where officials say the car is. The orange backhoe is where the open-air portion of the canal ends and it turns into an underground culvert"

so someone just threw their car away?
Can NOPD access every stolen car reported across the US?

Just seems like it would be pretty damn difficult to push a car in there

So about where the underground drain turns north towards the Lake?

So how the hell is it going to cost 100k just to look down there. No. Unh unh. Put some protective gear on the folks who work for S&WB, and send their asses down there. They're already on the clock. Get to work.

S&WB’s explanation is that because the canal is usually filled with water and may contain hazardous materials, they have to contract out to specially trained and certified divers. Those divers are really pricey.

I buy this. Who know what in the world is down there. You wouldn't just slip on a snorkel mask and dive it.

for sure, it's city runoff water. It's full of toxic shite

Bit more info from S&WB: someone got a look at the brake tag on one of the cars and it was dated 2007
so, Katrina put it there?
It the tag expired in 2007, and it was a 2 year tag...that would mean that it could have gotten there in 2005 during Katrina
Thats plausible.

Reminds me of this picture...just another example of how government ruins EVERYTHING they gain control of.

On Google Map, look where the canal meets Broad. The only thing that would prevent a car going into the canal is a seemingly new chain link fence. Water rolls through these canals after a good rain and could easily push a car.

Did we have two year tags back then? I haven't ever kept my up-to-date, but I thought the two year thing was recent
