She could have definitely paid a little less for the same car with some patience and legwork, but if you want an effort-free car buying experience, I don’t think they can be beat.
Yep, carmax is awesome for those that don't want to haggle. You won't get a "great" deal, but you also won't get ripped off either like you can at a dealership. Carmax is what they are, good vehicles for a fair price.

lets find out together...using the OT's spank bank truck for example...if we just paid what the Vangriff wants and depending on fees and what not...gonna spend $3000 more at carmax.

Everyone’s experience is different, but i’ve Bought my last 3 vehicles from Carmax and theyve been great.. are they the absolute rock-bottom prices? No, but i’m Ok for paying a little more for the high quality used cars they sell.. every car i’ve Gotten there looked and drove like new, and haven’t had many issues.. But the biggest Pro, my favorite thing about using Carmax is that, if I’m gonna drop $20 or $30k on a new ride- that’s a lot of money, so I’m going to be very picky.. with Carmax, you can search their inventory all over the US to find exactly what you want, the exact options, exact colors, one owner vehicle, no rental history etc.
In re to trade ins, my experience is that it’s all over the map.. i’ve Talked to people who got way more from Carmax for a trade in than they thought, and those who were lowballed.

I prefer them over going to a dealership and having some 19 year old kid with a New Iberia haircut and ‘urban accent’ try and tell me how to manage my money.

Sales experience was very good, but their service department was worse than bad. That's all I have.

Personally, I’d never buy a used vehicle with only 5k mi, it’d make me think something’s wrong with it, lemon law buyback or something.. i like to buy from Carmax vehicles that are 2-3 yrs old, wth 30k or 40k on the clock.. then i always ge the extended warranty.. comes out way ahead of buying new.

CarMax - Pros / Cons by LSUbase13
From experience, I find them to be on the high end of pricing.
You're better off with something like CAR GURU which will help you find the best local deals.
Good luck.

When your transmission is going out and they offer you more for your car than it is worth, CarMax is the best! You don't even have to buy from them. You can sometimes find the same make and model new from dealer cheaper than what they charge.
So i'm told...

I've had to get multiple cars in the past 5 years due to old car age and accidents. CarMax doesn't offer very good prices for their cars and has a somewhat limited selection compared to other websites. Depending on what you're looking for in a vehicle, you're not likely going to find the best deals at a place like CarMax.
Plus, if you don't live in a big car sales area, like Atlanta, Nashville, etc., your selection is going to be even smaller.
you can search their inventory nationwide. They have a huge selection. If it's at another city you can get it moved to your city. It's like $800 to get one sent from Seattle to BR which isn't ridiculous and it's like $200 from Tulsa to BR.

Car Max is a scam.
The car buying process is a lot easier but you end up paying them what they want. No Haggle is BS.
The prices at Car Max are not crazy high but maybe 5-10% more than you can negotiate with a regular car dealer.
So you end up paying for that fast painless buying process at Car Max.
I'd rather spend the extra 4 hours fighting with a dealer and saving my money.

You will not get a good deal.

Every time they appraised my vehicle to sell, they offered me $1000s below what I had offers on trade. And agree that I want a deal to buy, not the price they set, so to not have them move on my vehicle/trade and pay near retail for their vehicle, will keep me off the lot @ carmax
Understand that most dealerships just play games with trade-ins.
But CarMax does seem, lately, to be low-balling cars. I had read somewhere that over 90% of the cars they buy, they ship out to the auction. Very few cars meet their standards to be resold at CarMax.
10 years ago, I sold them my car, it was a POS and they gave me $2,000 and I signed that offer before they changed their mind.
Recently, my FIL got an offer on his car, which has a blue book value of about $11,000, and they offered him $4,000 for it. Insane.

They offer crap on trade ins

cant get a good trade from a dealer on your POS?
clear the codes with a cheap autozone computer and sell it to carmax for top dollar.
that's the kinda car you're buying from them.
I pity the fool that bought a certain 2010 GMC Acadia from them. yeesh.

Some people don’t mind paying a little extra for a better experience...how is that a scam?

Does that imply that you don't put a financial "value" on your time?
I bought a vehicle from a dealer in 2015. It's took almost 6 hours and every person I spoke to at every 15 minute interval was pushing an additional cost. I left with the vehicle I wanted at the price I wanted but lost an entire day and was irritated and exhausted.
I purchased a truck from Carmax last November. It was about $750 more than I could have gotten at a dealer with some haggling. It took less than an hour total from test to driving off the lot.
So I saved 5 hours from my last experience and paid a little more. My time is valuable to me (except when I'm on here )
It was worth it.

I think they're sales folks don't work on straight commission but rather their commission/bonus is based on total unit sales.
Used to be a sales consultant, and this is correct. Commission is based on units not price, so they aren't going to pressure you into anything outside of your price range. Also get pretty solid commission for their extended warranty, so they might try and push that a little more. The whole goal was to create a pressure-free environment, but that can depend on who your salesperson is.
I'll agree that trade-in or appraisals can come in low. Most of their data is based off of auction data for cars around the same year/mileage/shape. They do come in a little low sometimes, but their goal is to make it as easy as possible for you and will point out how much time and effort you might have to put in for the extra $1k to sell it yourself.

Or in my case, what i like to do is find the exact vehicle i want wherever in the country it’s located- then buy a one-way plane ticket and drive the vehicle back home.. it’s an awesome excuse to take a road trip, and in most cases you can get a one-way ticket cheaper than what it would cost to ship to where you live (i.e. can probably get a plane ticket cheaper than the $800 shipping fee from Seattle.)

Yeah, I would likely do the same thing if I were sure I was going to buy it and had the time to drive across the country.
