I assumed artillery would be the issue.
What defenses do the Japanese have? If North Korea launches a missle at Japan, what are Japans options?

Guaranteed 100% that precautions have been taken to prevent any damage to Seoul.
SK is by no means defenseless or unprepared. That scenario has been considered a thousand times over every day since the 50s.
I've spent time in Seoul. Never felt threatened.

Just for reference. Study on NK military capabilities and unlikelihood of anything happening to Seoul.

A big problem is Seoul. No way to stop its devestation early on. NK can inflict serious damage before it can be stopped.
This is a common misconception. And actually a piece of false information that we have perpetuated. In the event of a conflict, we are supposed to be "shocked" by how light the damage to Seoul is, given the narrative of thousands of Nk artillery rounds raining down on it.
The truth is that only the extreme northern suburbs are in danger of massed artillery strikes. And then only by their very largest guns, at the limit of extreme range.
Our counterbattery artillery radar will be plotting solutions within seconds of the first incoming projectiles. In fact, our counterbattery rounds will be fired before their first rounds even impact. Within 5 seconds we will have impact adjustment solutions in the computer, and our next salvos will be on target.
Their guns won't last 5 mins in an engagement.
The biggest issue is actually the NK's 100k crack special forces. They carry enough food and ammo for about three days. They will swarm across out of tunnels and wreak havoc with suicide missions. Like overrunning government buildings and all that. They'll be waiting for the "main force" troops to relieve them. Troops that will never come. But they'll fight to the death. They're true believers.

Media trying to make a story out of nothing because of the Syria strike. That carrier was just recently in the same area around Korean peninsula a month or 2 ago and its not uncommon for it to be there. Fake news

Well unfortunately we are nearer a time to determine if you are right or if I am right than we have been for a long time.
And frankly I wouldn't want to be in Seoul when this does hit the fan. And I do believe it will at some point sooner rather than later.

He's right.
Sure, Seoul might get attacked, but it won't be devastation. I personally think anything attempted will be shut down before it even reaches the city limits.
Seoul is 18 miles from the DMZ with radar and imaging and their own weapons already set and ready

only three carrier strike groups are currently active?
I know the Nimitz has been decommissioned and the lincoln is under re-fit. But that was surprising.

Are we?

No, only 3 currently on 6 month deployments. All of the carriers are not on deployment at the same time. There is a 36 month cycle that includes shipyard time for maintenance, sea trials and workup cruises, then 6 month deployments.

War with North Korea would be the cleanest best pleasure.

Kind of. The other carriers not currently deployed are either undergoing maintenance, or on their non-deployment schedule. Even when carriers are not overseas, they do tons of regional cruises for training and such.
I feel bad for those Vinson guys, they were on their way to a port call in Australia and got turned around to head back to Korea. Happened to me a couple of times on the Roosevelt in the 90's. Missed out on Palma Spain and Marseilles France on separate occasions due to Sadam acting up and the conflict in the Balkans.
Carriers are probably the worst ships to be on if you want to see the world.

It probably can't get any worse for those people
