Not being a smartass but you just decide not to use the rear hatch when UR in this mode?

This is an absolute! If your exhaust pipe(s) goes straight back to where the exhaust would vent under a hitch mounted carrier, you have to go roof rack. I learned this fact the hard way when I arrived at our family vacation spot only to see the plastic bin right above the exhaust completely melted and half the contents destroyed.

If you do the hitch basket you might consider one that swings out if you need to open the rear gate and get inside.
Roof racks work well just keep in mind the bars need to be placed strategically to not get wind noise while driving. Look at Thule or Yakima

Those are nice but you have to remove it to open the tailgate. Pain in the ars.
I have a rooftop Thule that I got at a neighbors garage sale & it’s been awesome. Great for sandy beach stuff

Fortunately, her stuff was in the back of the suv. Most of what was ruined was food and drink (1.75L of Makers Mark gone when glass shattered).

So you have crossbars already? Makes your choice of selections broader.
Theres soft versus hard shell.
I have had a Yakima Rocketbox for 11 years that has been great (for the missus' QX60) and is still going strong.

Tells you more about Vidor than hitch boxes.

If you go with a hitch mounted one you better figure out how to relocate the license plate with a light on it so it can be seen or be prepared to be pulled over
Not if you don’t live in a police crazy state like Texas

I bought a hitch rack from harbor freight and totes from Home Depot. 2 straps and all our stuff fits water tight. Totes can be used for storage after
