How is this legal?
Blame Ronnie in the White House and the greed of the 1980's.
They let currency be privatized with profits not related to risk like banking and insurance. The banks back then went from a business based on profits from interest spreads.
Pay low interest to savings accounts
Charge higer intrest to money lent
Make revenue from management of the spread
Now banks make money from
Fees
Additional charges
The overpriced "skim" for wealth management
In the 1980's the bank lobbyist in Washington made credit and credit rating the defecto measuring tool. When you get insurance, it is based on your credit rating. Same for many other decisions you are unaware of. The credit cards now "skim" purchasing power that the old mob / organized crime could dream about.
Before 1980, 1 dollar purchased 1 dollar in goods or services
Since, a private company takes between 2.5% to 5.0% off that dollar your (the citizen consumer) now has about 95% in real purchasing power.

That’s what the card companies charge them
They're not paying 4%. Cash is legal tender so it should be illegal to deny it, but to charge more than they're paying for the cc charges is bullshite.

Where did this happen?

You want taxes to pay the fee? I'm confused here. Who's gonna pay it if not you? If a government entity pays it then where would it come from? Or do you think the huge infrastructure and people that do card processing is somehow free?
I want a cash option
I have no issue with them charging a fee if I choose to pay by card
Second, 4 percent seems really high especially for a high volume business.

Thanks. Sorry for repeating a question. I didn't scroll down all the way.
I believe when I lived in Ocean Springs their tax collector's office was the same way....but I recall the debit card could be used...and even that had a 1.5% fee which I argued about.

but I can't recall any business that requires payment only by credit card.
Most youth sporting events (entry and concessions) are card only.
LSU athletics concessions is card only.
Hell, even Superior Grill is card only now.

That I don't understand because that's just theft.

But they don’t charge a fee.
When a business goes card only they save money by not having to pay people to deal with counting and depositing cash, and they further benefit by reducing theft risk. They can also hire lower quality employees.

“Cards only” and charging a fee
The business ideally should just bake the fee into their prices if they're going to pass it along to the consumer.

All card only businesses charge the fee in their pricing.
But not all of them are dumb enough to be that honest.

Went to go pay my car taxes in person because it used to be cheaper than the fee to do it online. They hit me with a 6% credit card fee.
