Car Stalling After Emissions Test

I had an emissions test today. When I started my car after the test, it shook and died. The battery tested normally, but it started with a jump. I let it run for an hour afterwards, and it died again. There is no check engine light. Any suggestions. Thanks in advance.

What’s the date on your battery? It sounds like a battery issue and the emissions test deal was a coincidence

The battery is 14 months old

They probably knocked off a vacuum hose or something. Check for a loose hose around the intake.

Check that your fuel cap is tight.

That’s a good call. I’m pretty sure they screw with those during the test. I’m trying to remember what all else they do because I imagine they just screwed something up.

Time out, it wont start unless you jump it? And it dies after running for an hour. Battery or more likely alternator is dead and its killing your battery.
Put a voltmeter on the battery while the car is running. Should be 14.2 V or so when running. 12v when off. If you dont have one, a friend certainly does.

When troubleshooting mechanical or electrical problems, you should throw coincidence out the window until you can prove that is not the case.

Get a BlueDriver and check code.

Use the Help Board since they won't make an Auto Board...

Have you checked if your battery cables are tight?

Thank you all. It happened after the emissions test was done. The car passed. It got too late into the night with the troubleshooting. I will park it and try next weekend thanks again

In an emissions test they normally check the ERG valve to check for tampering. It normally is just visual, but if it is in an area that is difficult to see they may remove it. A EGR valve left unhooked or leaking will cause rough running very similar to a cylinder without spark. It is also possible they knocked off a vacuum hose or deleted settings through OBD2, which could cause the issue as well. It is possible if the deletions caused a return to factory settings. The ECU may have made adjustments over time to deal with systems that weren't working optimally and kept the engine running within reasonable parameters; the factory reboot could expose the issue. In that case the ECU may be able to right the ship by itself over time but it may be too big of a job to do at one time. With an advanced enough scan tool you can read the historic codes and permanent codes which might give you some clues if this is the problem. If the system was reset it is likely the OMB2 readiness monitor will indicate the system is not ready for testing again.

Go to an Autozone and have them check your battery. They check amps and other things as well as volts. Voltage isn’t the end all be all if your battery is ok.
