Well for a long time trucks were only for people who needed them but weren't very nice or comfortable. Cars were big, safe, comfortable and had all the options.
Now cars are cheap tin cans and so light they ride like shite and have little room.
Trucks/SUVs are more luxurious, more comfortable, safer, and fuel economy is much improved over years past. You have more room with top luxury and the ability to comfortably fit a family plus luggage and tow a trailer if needed. It's a no brainer

Cars are so expensive that I drive them until they fall apart.

The difference in a small SUV and a car is negligible. Not sure why this is even news. They are mostly built on car chassis.

The size of trucks and SUV’s and the sheer number on the road is reason enough to make most people want something bigger than a car. It was for me, as well as the deplorable condition of the roads themselves and what it did to my previous vehicles. If I had a kid I was buying a vehicle to put them in today in the BR, I can tell you plainly that I’d want them in a truck or larger SUV for safety reasons alone.
When I see people driving these little squirt cars like the Cube, Prius, Mazda2, Scion Xb, or worse still a Scion iQ, I have to wonder if these people value their lives in the least. You stand about as much chance on a motorcycle as you do those little things against a full size truck nailing you. At least you aren’t crushed to death like a sardine on a motorcycle. You’re just airborne. Hell, maybe you land someplace soft.

A lot of people will. There were some good deals to be had when gas was $4 a gallon. I don't really give a shite anymore. I drive like 8k per year and the wife drives about 5k. Gas could go to $6.50 a gallon and I'd keep my truck

I laugh at all these people who claim they're driving a 'crossover' or 'SUV'. No, you're driving a station wagon.
