A quick drive around town is all it takes to notice that new SUVs and trucks outnumber new cars in a big way, but you might not realize just how big the trend has become

Car sales are on pace to hit a 60-year low, Automotive News reports, thanks to the huge growth coming from the light-truck sector, which includes both pickups and SUVs. 5.3 million cars might sound like a lot, but it would actually be the slowest year for car sales since 1958.

AN points out that the split was pretty much 50/50 five years ago, showing just how hard and fast this trend hit the market. But through May in 2018, light trucks outsold cars by more than double. And it's not just long-time buyers holding strong -- AN pointed out Edmunds data that shows only 52 percent of car buyers in 2018 bought another car. Everyone else went to light trucks.

Good economy
Cheaper gas
SUVs/Trucks more comfortable ride than ever before and getting better MPGs than before
Mini vans are lame and crossovers are the new chick cars

It's all the fault of the crossover. Women don't want to drive a van so the automakers redesigned vans to look like SUVs. So now these women are all driving crossovers with less storage and functionality than their van counterparts.

Every manufacturer wants to classify their 'cars' as SUVs as cars for environmental reasons. EPA rules are looser on SUVs even though they are cars.

This is why Ford is getting out of the 'car' business.

I’ll be turning in my Lexus sedan for a truck soon.

Just too many times in the last few years that I really could have used a truck.

What was going on in 1958? I thought that was the heyday of the sedan?

I’m driving a ‘14 Grand Cherokee bought new in March of 2014.

It has 164k miles on it and it has never been in the shop other than a set of tires, oil changes & one set of front brakes.

Like old Mako boat hulls, they build vehicles today too good for their own good.

Equinox outsells Malibu
CR-V outsells Accord
Rav4 outsells Camry
Escape outsells Fusion
Rogue outsells Altima

Ford F-150 and Chevy Silverado outsell pretty much everything.

Just did this. But not because I needed a truck all that often. My car was in an accident. Ford EcoBoost is getting me 22-23 average as of right now. Lexus ES350 only got 25-26, so not a huge hit. My wife has a "luxury" car now and I just didn't really see the point in having two nice cars anymore. So decided against getting another.

Was nice to have a bed even if not necessary, nice to have a vehicle that holds value at high mileage, and nice to know it won't get totalled as easily. I was safe from injury in the car, but it was destroyed in front and rear. I've been hit 5 times. Two times in a truck, absolutely no damage.

The newer Grand Cherokees are legitimately good cars.

Yeah but 2012-2017 they were close all time highs, so not surprised they are coming down a bit.

Negative, they didn’t have it in early ‘14 models. They only offered the V-6. 3.6L

Gas isn't that cheap. I paid $2.72 a gallon this morning in Mandeville.
