So...I must not be living right. On the way to take the family to Disney World and the car transmission suddenly acting up.

Nissan Maxima SV with 71k mi (OT Poor). CVT and the damn thing suddenly slips out at 75mph and the rpm's go through the roof. Ended up putting on cruise control and that kept it going for a bit.

We make it to a Nissan dealer in South GA and leave it with them and get a rental to continue to Disney.

They call back today and say the trans is shot and it will be 4k to replace with rebuilt. Headed home on Tues and I have to let them know something Monday morning.

I am wondering if they are being straight with me or if I have any reasonable options for dealing with this. Any help for an admitted car idiot would be appreciated.

That should be covered under powertrain warranty unless Nissan changed it. We had a '07 Altima that had the transmission go out at 96k and it was covered. Another 4k miles and I'd have been screwed though.

ETA - looks like they changed it. Used to be 100k.

Trade with them. See what kind of deal they can make you on a new one or a good used car.

I doubt they are lying.

It is my understanding those CVT transmissions were bad when they first started using them but they are fine now.

What year model?

What you experienced are pretty standard symptoms of transmission failure. CVT transmissions are notoriously expensive, and even a normal transmission will be upwards of 2 grand to rebuild. Your only other option is to have it towed home and get a second opinion. The money you'll save having a dedicated transmission shop do it will likely be offset by the towing cost. I would be filling out a warranty claim yesterday.

What year is it? I had an Altima do the same thing several years back and took it to a mechanic. He said it would be $3500 to replace the transmission but he thought Nissan had extended the warranty on the transmission because they were having lots of problems. I took it to a dealership and sure enough they dropped in a brand new transmission for free. Car was 7 years old and had 87,000 miles on it.

Second mistake

That sucks to have that with family in tow. That said, it sounds right for parts and labor at a dealer.

Dealerships ALWAYS go balls deep on customers. You can buy parts for any car much cheaper through different outlets than what it costs at a dealership.

I'm guessing this is a 2014? Just went over the miles, but some dealers might work with you on partial pay.

Nissans are known to have tranny problems, especially the older Altimas.

I googled nissan power train warranty and found this. It definitely would be worth checking into to know for sure.

cvt trannys are expensive. IIRC my brother's altima was going to be around 3500 or maybe even 4k. I think it was 4k at dealership and 3500 at tranny shop.

Not a car expert but this exact thing happened to me and my rebuilt transmission was about $2.5k in a 2005 4WD Tahoe.

You're on the road so your options are limited its probably best to go with the dealership.

Edit: no I didn't pay $4k I paid $2.5 just looked it up.
