Coming home from vacay as a kid. The family wagon developed a loud clicking noise from the left front. Pulled into a dealership in Albuquerque, where they kept it two days and couldn't diagnose the problem. They recommended not driving over 45 mph because the wheel might fall off. We crawled home across Texas, took it to our local dealership where they found a loose speedometer cable. 15 minutes and $25 later, no more noise.

This is what I would do if it were mine. Assuming you have a truck you can rent a UHaul trailer for somewhere around $100.
Go get the car and bring it to your home town, find a used transmission (usually $750 to $1K), have it installed by most any mechanic shop (usually $250-400), and when it's back to going trade it off.
ANY cvt transmission is junk, I don't care who it's made by.

Tell your wife to STOP THE CAR TO A DEAD STOP before she takes it out of Reverse to drive forward.
The main wear and tear on a transmission is due to people backing up and putting the car back into Drive while the car is still moving backwards.
You need to straighten out your woman with a hand check or SOMETHING, bro.

Looks like that should be warranty if under 100K. Ask the dealer about that.

How far did it go on cruise? I find it odd that it acted up, then worked on cruise control.

50+ miles without a hiccup. When our if cruise it wouldn't last 10 minutes. I found it very odd and figured it was some sort of electronics issue. Not so according to the nice folks at the Nissan dealer.

The cvts have issue.
Another issue that they have is fluid mixing in the radiator huge black eye for Nissan.
It's likely the cvt. Don't have a dealership do it. It should cost around $2600 installed

It is odd that the Trans worked for that long on cruise, leads me to believe it is some kind of an electronic issue
