Some of yall are really off on your #'s.

My source is me.

I was an IT admin for an auto group for 10 years. They have 20 new car rooftops. My brother is thier #1 salesman every year. He sells 20 to 30 cars every month. He is a top 50 salesmen nationally for Kia.

My brother makes roughly 150k per year.

Out of 20 dealerships only a handful of guys clear 100k. Your average car guy is probably around 70k-80k per year.

You might have some guys hitting 300k+ in a really big city like NY selling exotic or high end cars.

Parts guys and service writers make like 40k. I've talked to them.

The GM of a dealership generally gets a small % of profits. 200k is about the most I saw one bringing in.

If a guy starts making too much money, the dealerships will adjust the way the guys get paid to keep more $ in house. It's shitty, but the way they do it.

It's a greedy shady industry.

Learn to take care of what you have, not give a frick what others think and take care, & buy a vehicle that you can use for ten or more years. That will hurt them

I’m about to literally do the same. Are the pretty easy at Stellantis dealers now? Don’t feel like playing games

I went to a dealer that my family knows well, didn’t negotiate price and my trade value was more than fair…so easy for me.

If you want the current deal, it’s only on Laredo and Altitude trims until 2/28. $3,500 in rebates and 1.9% for 72 months. Wasn’t crazy about the term, but I’ll probably pay it off in 4 or 5 years anyway. Couldn’t pass up 1.9%.

Greater than 5%? Maybe.

It is pretty easy to get outside financing and to show up at a dealership with a check.

I worked at a dealership for a minute after college cause I could make more there than an entry level marketing position and what I saw was about that or 1-10 would pay cash/outside finance.
Most people are lazy with their money and it didn’t matter if they were wealthy or poor.

The game has changed. Car dealerships used to compete on price and volume now they compete on vehicle availability.

Car dealerships and manufactures learned they make more money with less work when inventory is low.

What was GM’s response to to much truck inventory. 5 years ago it was to lower the price. This week it was to close the plant in Indiana.

Sadly, This is the new normal. The only thing we can do to combat this is to drive our cars longer. I average 15 years per vehicle in my family so that is going to be tough for us.

Yeah 1.9% is basically free money in this market.

Yep. I only used my trade value as money down, cash is earning more in my savings…pretty wild.

He’s grossly underpaid.

Recently bought Gee Jr a vehicle. He turns 16 May 2024. I started looking for something 6 months ago, thinking it would take a year. Finally found something for him and bought it, even though I don't need it until next year. Paid 13k for a 56,000 mile truck that's unique. Patience is the key.

Not too bad considering prices of similar vehicles.

Had no clue how it worked, just saw 25% off a quick google search. Thanks for clarifying.

Dealers (advertising) create emotional attachments to get you to buy the dark red Toyota off their lot, instead of the white one you wanted 100 miles away at a different dealer.

You can go on Toyota.com and have different dealers fight over you, and trade cars from a dealer in Mississippi to one in Baton Rouge, but you want Price LeBlanc, Dahlin, because your family bought a car from them 8 years ago from a guy that was fired 90 days later.

Most of this is basic marketing, namely starting with (urgency) consumers that make proclamations like, "we need to buy a new car this weekend."

If the average car salesmen gets 25% commission (just googled average commission) on a 50k truck. That’s 12.5k. That means if they sell 5 trucks a month they are making more than some CRNA’s or engineers. Insane…

Your math is flawed. $50,000 truck has maybe $3500 in markup not counting $1200-$1500 in holdback. Assuming the dealer doesn’t pack that cost, which is unlikely, 25% is $875. 5 trucks a month isn’t $50k per year.

Blame the manufacturer, not the dealer and damn sure not the salesman.

P.S. I’m not a car salesman or dealer.

I wouldn't say I "pulled one over" on a dealership because that doesn't really happen, but my second-favorite car buying experience was with a very very large dealership in GA, and walked in with 9 month pregnant wife. I said to the salesman I want that car, at this price, and he did some fiddling around on the computer and said ok, we can do that price. Let's go to the finance office [this is where we'll rip them off! they thought].

In the finance office, after the price was negotiated, that's when I pulled out my bank draft I already had pre-arranged, and the terms, and asked if they could beat it. The guy heed and hawed, and said he couldn't beat it, but it would take a while to get the paperwork done with an outside bank because of this and that blah blah.

That's when pregnant wife starts saying she's having pains, we have to go, cancel the order, let's talk Monday, etc. Suddenly a 4 hour ordeal got done in 4 minutes.

frick those guys.

It’s a very simple answer.

The same applies to houses

People are happy to pay $1200/month on a car note and so they will keep putting crazy prices on the vehicles.

If people stopped buying cars for 6 months unless someone had no choice, the pricing would drop

Back in the day at a big reputable dealership here in Lafayette, we made a quarter (25%) on the front and a dime (10%) on the back end.

This was years ago, and shoppers were getting smart thanks to the internet - so most cars were sold slightly above "cost". The real money was made on the backend (for us salesmen anyways).

Used cars - different story altogether. lol

But you volunteered for that. You didn't start looking for a car 6 weeks ago, or ordering one 6 months ago, or telling every dealer in GA and SC they needed to fight over you, you said, "that one." You didn't go on Carmax, you didn't hit brand.com, you just did it the old way that happened 15 years ago. I guess I applaud you for paying for some salesman's Friday night at the strip club. You're gonna get a deal, just like everyone is going to time the market, amirite?

I don't know what you expected to happen.

Even worse, you think your wife is ever going to forget that you used her to save $1,200 on a car?
