With new car prices through the roof, it must be very hard to qualify for financing, or many big loans are going to people who will default. Will car debt turn to dust like home debt a while back?

When was that article from? This is relative to timelines I specified above.
Second hand luxury watch prices are down
Luxury sports car inventory is up
All relative to 6 months ago

I JUST went car shopping yesterday: I didn’t even ask for financing but they came out with 72 months as base proposal. I remember this being 60 so I guess in debt longer

The cheapest car out there is the car you currently drive. Paid off car I assume. Fix the AC and now you have a paid off car with a working ac.
If you have successive failures over the next few months, then get rid of it.
At what point did you plan to get a new car anyway? If it’s way down the line then fix it. If not get rid of it

I work at a dealership, parts/service not sales. However I can say that we are the #1 selling dealer in our state and group size. I didn’t watch but the intro to the video, I’ll watch it all tonight. Guy made some good points. Covid brought about a buying frenzy. I get that people think dealers were ripping people off, but here is the thing, we couldn’t replace inventory on the lot. We could have sold out in two months if we had kept the old pricing structure. We priced to keep sales at the right amount so we could keep the plate spinning. If we had sold out in two months, we would have been basically out of business. As far as pricing above msrp, we don’t do that much, it we did get a few units that were 1 of 300 and 1 of 1000….those we priced at whatever the market was. Some will still consider this predatory, I can’t help that. But working in the back, myself and the other 30 employees were glad we could keep the doors open and get a pay check.

Bravo, this is the best way I've ever seen this explained. You can't help anyone with anything if you have no cars to sell.

Seeing tons of videos lately about how dealerships are not able to move inventory
just a guess, they overbought during the supply chain squeeze when they all had empty lots and were moving everything
now they are sitting on inventory that was purchased at a higher price and rather pay the higher floorplan than take baths selling cars at a loss.

Man you could get a used crv for a solid price. Don’t buy brand new.

Nobody, I repeat, nobody care about what you drive. My guess would be that if you asked 20 people that you know fairly well, they couldn't even remember what your car is.
Now the A/C being broken in the south? Yeah, get that fixed, it's really not even that expensive. A CRV AC compressor from the era is like a $150-200 part. Add in a charge and some labor, you can get cold air moving for a reasonable cost.
As for car sales, I have some friends in the business and like anything, it depends. Overall sales are better than '23 but behind '24. Their Honda dealership is moving cars at a good pace, so is Toyota, even with crazy prices. They bought out a couple of dealerships a few years ago to get the Toyota dealership, but they had to buy CJD dealership as part of the package. The CJD dealership is a disaster right now. Offering is shite, support from Stellantis is shite, rates and incentives through stellantis are shite. All told their average vehicle time on the lot is near 120 days. My friend said they have new 2023's at that dealer they can't move. The used side of the business is going through a correction. The real losers in all of this are the folks that bought massively marked up vehicles in the Covid era and are still massively upside down on their loans with deeply depreciated vehicles.
All in all your mileage may vary. Some units are still popular and moving, others are not.

I appreciate the wisdom. Def looking at getting the AC working. As funny as it may sound - I have never driven anything "cool" or "nice" which I know may make me sound silly or pretentious. Car ads are trying to work on me.

We definitely did that, we still a ton of Ram trucks so we just slowed down the ordering to get back to a reasonable days supply. I think we are at about 45 days. That’s the seeet spot as long as inventory stays flowing.

By insurance standards your car may be totaled out, depending on what is broke.
You say A/C and heat. Sounds more like a switch in the dash to me.
Anyway, my advice is that you should strongly consider a used car BUT you must buy wisely.

Stealerships are the whipping boy of the auto industry.
These are the people we actually see on TV and in person. It doesn't help that they are the people that are expected to be dealt with. Try arguing the local grocery clerk down on a dozen eggs.
Folks just trying to make a living.
The sales clerk was female at my last purchase. I got up and walked out. I never raised my voice. We just couldn't agree. If she would have followed me out I would have bought her a beer, talked to her about the weather and hit on her.

Idk if they are true.
I took my Toyota in for service and saw a lot of pickup trucks (they were drowning in Tundras and Tacomas) but almost no Camrys, Highlanders, or Priuses. But Toyotas allocation system is weird.
My local GMC dealer has a decent amount of Sierra pickups but almost no Yukons. They have a good reputation and they seem to sell a lot of everything. They don’t carry much of the smaller pickups though.
My local CDJR dealer and Ford dealer seem to have a lot of everything. New or used. Lots of Rams and F-150s collecting dust. Seems like there are a lot of Explorers and Jeeps too.

Just bite the bullet on a toyota or honda with 120k miles on it-- you probably pay between 12k and 17k depending on the year and make.
I was in a pinch on a vehicle because my 2003 Suburban died on me. Got a 2015 Highlander XLE with 120k miles for $17.5k out the door(tax and title included). You could probably get something similar 1-2k cheaper as you seem to have time to shop it and not against the gun.

If your rig is working fine for you other than the AC just get the AC fixed.
If it costs $1500 to fix, I doubt it will, so what? That's a lot cheaper than replacing it.

You laugh, but car window swamp coolers were actually used.
When I was 2, a damn long time ago, one of my first memories was when we moved from Anaheim, CA to Omaha, NE. We drove across the desert in a '53 Chevy. The car had a window AC.
My memory was lying on the back seat, trying to sleep while that sonofabitch was dripping hot water on my face.
