MM is 0 at the mouth in Venice......New Orleans is MM 95, St Louis is MM 180 the beginning if the River in Minnesota is MM 875

2014 at Zee Zee's bar, we met 2 dudes that smelled like old vagina duct taped to a foot. They gave us the scoop and had been paddling 50+ days from the Ohio River and stopped in BR for a beer and a bite. After many beers, a shower for them and washed/replaced clothes, they paused the trip for 3 weeks to come walk on the wild side with all of us 5th (and 6th) year LSU seniors. They finished paddling to the mouth of the river in New Orleans and one of them picked up a full time job in BR to keep the party going. Still get postcards from them every year or two. One of them was ex special forces, the other was a more hippy type. The hippy ended up riding his bike from Miami to Los Angeles a year or two later. He stopped in Baton Rouge to catch up for a week or so. When it was time to go, we dropped him off on the other side of the Atchafalaya spillway and sent him on his way. We got a postcard from Roswell NM a month later. They were built different and had the knowledge from the military to thrive on their trip. Long live "The River Gypsies" of Stanford Ave.

I know a guy who kayaked the length of the river with a friend while they were students at Louisiana Tech.

The mile markers reset at the Ohio. Total mileage is about 2300.

A couple of us kayaked across the river at Empire to fish the other side. I gotta say it's a whole lot different looking when your on it and that low to the water. The eddies and swirls were intimidating to say the least...big and looked like they were coming from 500 feet down...would push the kayak around pretty good.
Needless to say we made it there and back but it cured me of any thoughts of taking the whole thing on.

Several years ago I met this young man, Sam (23 yrs old) who kayaked the Mississippi River from MN to the GOM. He paddled from 35 miles to 112 miles each day. I met Sam in Destrehan and hooked him up with jambalaya, fresh fruit, water, Powerade, beef jerky, and Cajun seasoning. Click on this instagram link to follow his epic 76 day journey with awesome pics, video, and great writing skills ... Sam's solo river run The detailed pics of the river are astounding how they change from crystal clear, to blue, to muddy brown over it's 2400 mile course.
Sam used a QCC 500x 17 ft sea kayak that weighed around 45 lbs and made of carbon & Kevlar. Basically a racing kayak built streamlined for speed.
Sam said the most important equipment he used was a Marine VHF transmitter walkie-talkie to communicate with ships and monitor vessel traffic, especially in the locks
Day 1
Red Stick
Destrehan - Hale Boggs Bridge
coyote in Venice
Final day sunrise

The thought of the mosquitoes alone would keep me from doing this.

Not advisable. (eta apparently this guy did but had to know what he was doing) The River has some pretty crazy currents. A canoe could be jilted at random suddenly and the person would be flipped over and pretty messed up not soon after. The water flow isn't just from north to south, it's going in many other directions.
That's a pretty cool post.
