Cancelling Insurance Policy in Louisiana Requires Written Request?

Politicians of the OT, why the hell would Louisiana think it would be a good idea to require that I write a fricking e-mail to the insurance company to cancel my policy? Was policies magically getting canceled a big problem at one time?
Progressive can't find my e-mail, but they can continue to find my bank account.

So that a former insured can’t come back and claim they never cancelled it?

They need a signed request form which is on an acord template. Why should we cancel your policy on a phone call request we can’t prove?
Progressive could be different cause direct carrier but yes written request is generally always needed.

That usually gets handled by who you are switching your insurance to. Get insurance from a place reputable not The General to save some time.

Louisiana has some weird insurance policies and laws that make things a pain in the arse but don't reduce cost or help customers.

Just send them your copy of the email from when you sent the cancelation notice and cc’d yourself.
Then discuss with them why they continue to charge you.

Its so there’s a paper trail for the insurance company or agent to cover their own arse so someone can’t come back later and say they never requested a cancellation. Same thing goes when someone wants to raise their deductible or make a change that reduces their coverage in any way…need a written request from the policy holder

Are my elected representatives writing laws to protect constituents or insurance companies? The insurance company can require it, we don't need a frigin law to cover their dumb asses.

If you get your insurance through an independent agent they handle it

Canceled all mine when moving out of state without doing this, also had progressive for home and auto

Possibly if they are switching between carriers they write through. Not if switching agencies though. I would never accept a third party cancelation request in my agency, too much liability exposure.

Once you send the email requesting cancellation
your agent should send you a one page acord form, probably via docusign, just to click and sign (assuming you are going through progressive with an independent agent)

Insurance coverage, cancellation and endorsement requires written agreement on both sides.
Could you imagine the potential for fraud if people called in claims on there insurance policy and were told "someone canceled that policy by phone just the day before your loss".

So some agent doesn’t fraudulently cancel your policy leaving you high and dry when you need it. I’ve had it happen to a client and it sucks. Just write the letter—it’s not a big deal.
