I had to surrender my La license to get my Tx license. In Texas, you are supposed to get your license changed and plates/reg changed within 90 days of your move. Once you have to get an inspection sticker in Tx, you will be in a tough spot. They will write you an expensive ticket, but will waive it if you change to a Tx license before court date.
I ended up going about 5-6 months before I changed over, but eventually you won't have a choice when your license expires.

They took my license when I got one for a different state.

My brother lives in Houston. Has both TX and LA DL. Not sure how he does it, but he's not into any shady shite so there has to be a legal way to do it.

Well you have to be a current legal resident of the state to hold a drivers license of the state, not a past legal resident, so....

If you're doing this because of a DWI, transfer your license while it is still valid to a different state and the new state will give a clean license.

This. But you have to do it quickly, very quickly. I went to the DMV a day after I was out of jail and they had already had it in the system. Now Texas wants $150 for me to get a license. I just drove back to LA when my suspension was up and renewed it in Sulphur.

Right before your post I had just watched a young lady on Cops (in Harris County TX) who was pulled over for suspicion of DWI and the Cop mentioned quite a few times that it was unlawful for her to have two DLs in her possession. Her explanation was that she is going through a divorce and changed her name on the DL.

I don't carry both all the time. But use the LA id to bar hop. If I lose it who cares

I'm looking at buying some property in Texas. It will qualify me as a resident of Texas and I could probably get a DL. I would still live in LA and would not want to surrender my LA license. Just curious if they sheared a database or anything, as a assumed they did not.

Not sure. I just old the lady at the DmV I had two residencies. First one denied me unless I turned in my LA liscense. Second one let it go

I had a LA and FL and FL and CO license simultaneously. Can't remember the circumstances. I know several people who carry Montana licenses with others.

They have shared databases. Montana is the only state I know of who doesn't.
