Grew up driving one. Just bought an older Ford Ranger (Low mileage) and was thrilled that it was stick. I feel like I’m back in college. It’s what I’m about to teach my son to drive on.

who on here, if they’re being honest, can drive a stick?
It's not rocket science, sparky.

First car I learned to drive had a standard, 3 on the tree. I have a 69 Chevy with a 4 spd and it keeps me in practice and is a reminder of a time when the driver managed a lot of the active parameters, not the computer.
I don’t fault anyone that can’t drive one or doesn’t want to learn. People have different ideas about what the driving experience is about.

My play toy was a sequential shift manual non slipper clutch with a locked rear end.
I put about 15k miles on it in two years.
So...yes. I can drive a manual.
11k rpm redline.
By comparison, any low revving manual is a joke.

The question is not whether you can operate a manual gearbox, anyone can learn that in 30 minutes, it is whether you can effortlessly heel and toe.
It depends on the clutch.
If I don't think about it. Yes.
I trail brake almost every turn instinctually and have for the last 20 years. It's a habit from driving too fast.
If I'm not on a track I do almost everything but the true rev match with the heel.... Unless it's a sequential box.
I will always ran match a sequential box. Driving fast or not. Clutching is always to aggressive to try to shift normally.

The way to learn is to learn. That’s the way I did. First car was a standard, and if I was going to go anywhere in it, I had better learn to drive a stick. It’s a great motivator.

I have driven everything up to an 18 speed Eaton in a semi.
The first time I saw an 18 spd tranny I was baffled. 6 stick positions, high/lo selector, and a splitter... what the frickty frick kinda voodoo is that?

This is going to sound awful, and it was bad, but I got caught on Sherwood driving a stolen car when I was 13 and I was nominated as the driver because it was a standard. It wasn't a total stranger's car and I was an absolute juvenile delinquent at 13-17 yrs old

I know someone who bought their daughter a jeep, standard transmission bc he didn't want her texting and driving. She learned.

Never owned a manual transmission. It's been a while since I learned while working a construction job driving a dump truck and dually pick ups around job sites, but I could probably pick it back up.

Yes and I once tried to teach a friend from Nigeria to drive mine so he could become a mail carrier. After an hour of whiplash at the State Fairgrounds I gave up.
He never learned or became a mail carrier!

When you get in the mountains with a heavy load that splitter is a godsend. I begged my bosses to not ditch the 18's for 10's.

Bought an S2000 before I knew how to drive it. Learned how to drive it on the way home from purchase. Still have all gears to this day.

I’m considering getting a jeep for my daughter for her first vehicle, but it’s a standard.

Yep, still have an 85 Toyota 4x4

My husband can - he was supposed to teach me when we started dating 23 years ago ... but I still can’t
Posted on 5/27/21 at 11:07 pm to Clovis Pilgreen
Yes I can but I would advise against getting her a Jeep for her first vehicle though. Young, inexperienced driver In a short wheel base vehicle that has more roll over potential than other options. Nothing wrong with getting her a standard, I just wouldn’t get her a jeep for her first
ETA: that’s just my opinion
