Embrace the unit, use it as a prop. Maybe put beer holders around it

Do you really find an AC unit that aesthetically unpleasant? Do you not want people to know you have one?
Look, that guy has an AC. The horror.

Rest of you can blow me.
Which is good, because people blowing on you might help keep you cool after you trash your condensing unit.

No, its a minor thing, which is why I'm willing to spend $50 and 2 hours with a drill to slightly cover it.

It's louisiana, everyone has to have one. I would build a shrine for animal sacrifices in front of mine before I'd consider covering it.

we need a pic to figure this all out

Never cover a condenser unit. The fan is there to help return the liquid to a gas so it can be compressed. If it's not a gas it can damage your compressor. You can put something around it but ensure there is plenty of room. 6-12" to allow airflow and servicing.

Don't listen to anyone here. This is a great idea.

I thought maybe it would be ok if I didn't put a lot of cover on the top, just a few cross beams or open lattice
It needs air to breathe as you now know, but there's nothing wrong with putting something around it that would shade it from the sun. Would help it's efficiency.

Nope.1st-the fan is there to pull air across the condenser coils which helps cool them down. The air is pulled through the condenser coil and exhausted upward. 2nd-freon is turned to a gas when it passes through the expansion valve which is just before evaporator in the attic or wall closet inside home.
Lattice on side of outside unit is fine;however,6"is too close as restriction could occur at this proximity. I'd rather see 18-20". You should be able to step between lattice and unit. Nothing over top of unit. Good luck.

Yea, this. It's been a good 25 years since I worked in a/c. Was trying to channel my early 20's. Hell, I was still pumping in r-12. Shows how much I forgot. Good info btw...

I'm just trying to get some ideas here man. Never owned a home before and this HVAC is directly beside the back porch.
Then look into having someone relocate it.

This won't work if the regulations are the same as Arkansas. I tried to get mine moved around the corner when we got a new condenser but it can only be a certain distance away from the disconnect. They would have to run new electric as well. Unless, they guy was blowing smoke up my arse. I never did verify.

In the areas I have lived you only need to have a service disconnect with a removable link on the line feeding the condenser unit within a few feet of unit. Sounds like the guy didn't want to do the electrical work.

Make sure whatever you put around it considers the fact that someone will eventually have to work on it.

No way I'd ever consider covering my Hvac unit. At 7k for my Trane 5ton 2 stage heat pump I'd stick that bad boy the the front fricking yard if I could.

Don't listen to these people , I wrapped mine with a camouflage tarp I bought from harbor freight .....

Air conditionig is not very green. Thank you for doing your part to destroy the environment. Sweating won't kill you.

Be sure to have it cleaned every other year at least. I learned the hard way and burned up my first one after five years without cleaning. Lots of leaves built a layer of cardboard material around it the guy said.
