Sounds like someone is trying to convince themselves they aren't an alcoholic...

Has a job. Never misses work, but yes he is an alcoholic.

I think the only pre-req is that it's alcohol and you constantly frick up things in your life: work, school, relationships with your kids, wife, etc.

If your boy drinks and can maintain, then he's fine. But my guess is that there's more to the story.

this is just wrong on a ton of levels

I'll offer a different opinion, being an alcoholic has nothing to do with how much you drink. Being an alcoholic means there are certain routine things in life you can't do without drinking.

If you drink 12 beers a day but you can stop and function normally, that's not being an alcoholic. My family has two types of alcoholics, the kind that can't live without drinking. Drinks before and during everything.

Then my family has the shitty worthless people that just drink a lot because they are worthless and have nothing else to do. Alcoholics the drinking affects your life, some people just drink because they have nothing else to do.

Given, 12 beers a day is going to change your life for sure.

Eta: in my personal experience there are people that drink too much and then there are aloholics, people truly addicted to alcohol and can't live without it.

good luck with that though. The mind and body are going to become dependent on it after a certain point. I'd argue if you are at the point of 12 a day, you've reached that point.

my family has the same. Dad is the functioning alcoholic who can't seem to figure out that all of his problems in the last 30 years are because he is a drunken dickwad to his family.

Most doctors say that if you drink more than 3 beers per day then you are an alcoholic
