General info for food stamps in LA:

I just did a quick search. The maximum monthly food stamp benefit for a single person household in LA is $192. A household of 4 can get up to $640.

If you're sxamming, I'm sure it's a great deal. If you're a broke arse single mom trying to feed 3 rug rats, I bet $640 isn't as much as it sounds like. You could certainly survive off of it, but it won't be on crab claws and king cake.

There are cheap things they buy that are HORRIBLE for their health.

Its not just expensive stuff that is bad for them.

Honestly, I don't sweat them buying steak with their food stamps. Sure, its stupid from a budgeting perspective, but they're on a finite budget and lean protein isn't bad for you.

What do you think two MREs per day for a month would cost the taxpayer? Hell, I bet one MRE costs more than whatever the daily food stamp allowance is. How would you distribute them? That'll cost something too, and I suspect it'll be more expensive than loading EBT cards once a month.

I have no idea how much an MRE costs to make. Just assumed it was cheap, shitty food.

Sure, you can buy a steak or a crab claw on the first of the month, but then you won't eat on the 30th.

Which probably makes that surf and turf on the 1st taste that much better!

Ehh, I say no soda. Nothing but water. And that comes out your faucet. So, you can buy more food that will fill you up instead of drinking shite that makes you more thirsty and hungry.

I get some people may not have good access to water, but that's the only beverage someone needs. Everything else is crap.

I had to break your response in two. For the first part, you've got to remember that these are being made for the Pentagon. They're the same people who are paying $600 for a toilet seat. Wiki days an MRE costs about $7.25 per meal. I don't know how accurate that figure is, but it wouldn't surprise me if it were true.

However, in defense of MRE cost: They have to meet certain nutritional requirements, be packaged to be handled very roughly, withstand crazy temperature extremes and have an extended shelf life. That doesn't happen cheaply.

As far as being cheap, shitty food: As discussed, it's not cheap. As for being "shitty" food, I'll just say that if you're hungry enough, you'll be happy to tear open any menu MRE. I'm not a picky eater, so maybe I'm not the best judge, but the Turkey Tetrazzini was good stuff!

I agree, but add cheap coffee and milk.

Coffee is good for productivity

Does everyone on food stamps qualify for cheaper housing? If Grandma qualifies for food stamps, does she claim the same children or would she just get them for herself? What if theres no Grandma to provide free child care while you're at work? Then what?

I'm a big believer in not having children you can't afford. And I don't mean children you can only afford by collecting from state and federal benefit programs. But the reality is that there are people out the who have children they CAN'T afford. Something needs to be done, and unless you're willing to round 'em up and gas 'em like stray cats, we ought to try to keep them fed.

There must be a reason for that.

Because Wal Mart and the grocery store lobby don't want them restricted.

Forgot about milk, stopped drinking it. And still no to coffee. Cold glass of water and walking outside when you wake up is better actually. And let's face it, you aren't getting productivity out of these people no matter how much caffeine they drink.

More like gaming the system. have had women wanting me to fudge hours years ago so they could get more assistance with day care, they do get that while working. Plus, you can qualify for wic and snap with kids.

But like you said, that single mom with no help from anyone needs it. But, where is the father? Dead? Or dead beat? Just because she chose a shitty partner doesn't mean other people should be on the hook for that.

And look around. I see these fat frick women begging for money with their kids. They aren't hungry being obese, someone is feeding them.

How much do you think tax payers are spending on Mountain Dew and Twinkies vs all the money wasted on military equipment the Pentagon didn't need or ask for?

Both are a huge problem for different reasons, and neither is a strictly financial problem

I'm a huge proponent of taking away food stamps and making people stand in line for commodities.

I say this every time the food stamp discussion comes up. You get a ration card and go stand in line for your burlap sack of rice, potatoes, etc...

You're correct. If people really needed it, they'd stand in line waiting for their ration of commodities.

I've always said that a really bad hurricane acts as a great equalizer in the aftermath. Rich or poor, everybody is in that line for gas, ice, food or whatever. And everyone is happy to get some MREs.

I know that nobody on this board can relate, but when I was first married in my early twenties my wife and I did not make a lot of money. We had our first child and got on "Wic" (I think that is what it was called)

We were allowed to buy only milk, a certain type of government cheese, maybe eggs, and cereal like Honey Bunches of Oats or original Cheerios.

We were eternally grateful for that and thought it was perfectly fair. and by the way, Honey Bunches of Oats are fricking fantastic ! I ate that for dinner all the time

however, after we bettered ourselves with like a $12/hr job we were no longer qualified.

I thought it was similar for food stamps. I had no idea that the food card folk lived so high on the hog or I may tried to cheat the system a little.

This is exactly what I was trying to point out earlier. Max benefit for a family of 4 is $640/mo. You can also be working and earn up to $2665/mo (household total) and still qualify for something. I assume it's a sliding scale.

That $640 per month sounds like a lot, and I'm sure it feels like a lot if you're broke. But try feeding a family of four on $21.33 a day. It ain't going to be all crab claws and steaks.

And by the way, you probably already know this, but you and your wife are the people these programs are intended for. Temporarily getting some assistance until you can improve your financial situation.
