Can someone explain to me the change in Baton Rouge?

I grew up in Baton Rouge but it's changed drastically. There has been a great increase in people and cultures into the city over the last 20 years. It seemingly went from a small city to medium sized city with big city problems in that time span. Obviously Katrina had some effect in its transition, but is there a way to salvage its old soul without being overrun by a mob? Is there a way to clean BR and lower violent crime?

Baton Rouge is currently on a path to look like Jackson, Mississippi within the next 5 years.
In the immediate future, I see no hope of reversing that course.

I saw "Showgirls" and "Dick Tracy" there.
Two of the worst movies I've ever seen.

Well, the MSA population jumped from about 600,000 in 2000 to about 850,000 in 2016.
In case you were wondering when all the traffic showed up. If you moved to the region after 2000, you are that additional traffic.

I'm not from Baton Rouge so I can't speak to the city specifically, but whenever cities allow the plots to dictate policy, it's downhill from there.

Two words for fixing it.
Organized crime.
Organized crime.
