Also lived in South Louisiana my whole life. It has definitely been in the lingo for at least a couple of decades though I do not remember hearing it very much in my younger days.
The oldest folks I recall saying it (a little older than me, I'm 61) was my old boss who is about 4-5 years older than me. He is from Mamou. Went to high school in Eunice. Not sure where he picked it up.
Seems pretty prominent in younger Cajun accented nonFrench speaking baws I know from Vermillion parish. All oilfield guys. Wonder if that might be the source.
