Out of city limits in Ascension Parish and not in a subdivision.

Thinking of maybe building a deck and pergola to go along with some landscaping by next summer. Is that something I can do myself without a permit (I have the ability and know-how, I just don't know if it's legal). No utilities will be needed, just a plain old wooden deck and pergola with frost proof ceramic or porcelain tile floor.

I've tried calling the parish but I can't get anyone on the phone to talk to. Does anyone out there know?

Message Daniel "Doc" Satterlee on Facebook. He's a bit Batshit crazy, but he's very responsive and will know the answer.

You can email him as well.

Just a deck? Go for it. I did it at my house too last year.

He built one and posted that shite on here and got Roasted FOR YEARS about it. It was in Geismar so he may know the answer for you. He ran a NG line too.

Pergolas are stupid and pointless.

I wouldn't go that far, but I'd much rather have something dry and I can sit under in the rain.

Not that it rains much in South LA.

It seems nice to me. Why did he get roasted so much for that? What am I missing?

Also, what I have in mind is a pergola but with an actual roof so the family can sit under it during the rain. I just need something to hang my swing from and grow the wife's flowering vines onto, with a nice solid floor underneath. It will be somewhat under the trees in some shade so it will definitely act as our go-to hangout spot during the spring and summer months.

What jurisdiction do you live?

There has to be some sort of zoning resolutions where you are that describes setbacks, property use, size, accesory use, etc.

Have you already finished your skylight and tornado saferoom projects? You're a busy motherfricker! With all the home improvement you do and the hours you spend on TD, when do you have time for a job?

All good points. The skylight may not happen and I'm leaning away from the tornado saferoom idea as well due to the amount of extra work. My problem is I spend too much time up at night when all my money-costing ideas come to me and I then roll with them. I need to sleep more so I can save more money

I'm not laying a concrete foundation. The subfloor will be a nice 3/4" plywood underneath tile board (cement board), securely attached to the floor joists, which will be secured to posts set in concrete.

That shite is going to move, delaminate and crack due to moisture...
