I just don't see how this is legal. You never signed a ticket or a certified letter stating you received the ticket. I think someone should go all the way through the court system fighting these bull shite tickets.

I'm baffled as well. Don't have the money to fight it.

I've been told if I plead guilty the penalty will simply be them keeping the money I put up for bail.

So you're saying parking tickets are "illegal," too? You don't sign for them.

I have a couple camera tix and parking tix in NOLA over the last 3 years--not gonna pay them (principle--money grab). I get pulled over often (I drive 65k/yr. and fast)...the tix have never come into question.

The rental agency will get the fine and send to you...which will become a hassle, especially if you rented through your employer! You broke the law...pay it!

I'm not sure about other rental companies, but hertz will just charge your card.

Like someone wrote earlier, OP's credit card will get charged for ticket, plus an administrative fee for the car rental company to take care of the ticket.

All agreed to when he/she signed the rental agreement.

But that won't stop them from bitching that "it's not fair."

That's different because the city actually administers the tickets. In New Orleans, an outside company does it

IDK about Orleans but I got one a few years ago in EBR. Ticket was sent to my parent's house, they put the envelope in my room along with the hundreds of other mail I've gotten nearly all of which was junk mail. I never went through it.

3 years later I'm pulled over on suspected dui (wasn't inebriated in any way). Cop gives me the whole nine yards trying to see if I'm drunk, when that fails he tells me I'm going to jail on a bench warrant for a traffic ticket. Which I did.

You did not go to jail on a bench warrant for an unsigned citation. NOPE, NOPE NOPE. It's a non moving violation. You don't go to jail for not paying seat belt tickets and brake tag tickets. It has to be a moving violation and on top of that it has to be a citation issued to a person and not a vehicle.

Most rental car companies treat this just like an unpaid toll and will automatically charge your credit card for the cost of the fine.

I once got a parking ticket in Berkley, Ca. in rental. Figured they probably wouldnt track me down back in LA. 3 months later got a bill for 150, three times the original amt. Better pay up.

Pay it.

My attorney calls it the "rich person tax"

Here's his advice......

I got one in the mail a few months ago. On Canal, I thought I had missed a stoplight- it was late and all I saw was the flash. The ticket comes to my company- since the vehicle is registered to it.

Of course, I complain and say how is this legal? Blah, Blah, Blah.

He tells me it's not- since they did not follow due process. I.E. You signing the ticket stating you were the operator of the vehicle at that time. This is how it was defeated in Jefferson Parish. Since it hasn't been challenged in Orleans yet- it's still a money grab they can get way with.

But, there's nothing stopping a judge from issuing a warrant for an unpaid ticket if one day they were so inclined.

His advice- "It's not likely to EVER happen, but I would have a helluva time trying to get your arse out of OPP on a Sunday if it did- pay the damn fine, it's the rich people tax"

Not according to this 2014 article. Says they can't make you pay the ticket but may report you to collections.

I'm not doing anything like that, but thanks for being the resident tough guy.
