If that's the case then unfortunately her career in medicine is done. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news bro.

She should stop getting further into debt for med school. If she still wants to be in medicine, she should look into PA or NP schools. The OT prefers NPs anyway.
if it's any consolation, passing at the minimum score wasn't going to help her either. She needed to pass comfortably on the second attempt to have a decent shot.

She'll have limited options, either a less competitive program in a more populous town or more options in less desirable towns, BUT it's just residency and she wont be tied down wherever she does the residency. Depending on the field, she'll have the option to apply for fellowships and, AFIK, they wont ask for step one scores for fellowships.
Really the road is just more difficult but not impossible. Most patients won't care where she did her residency, they'll just care if she treats patients well.
ETA: Second time. Yeah. THAT could be trouble. I wouldnt discourage from continuing though.

She is taking it again, going to Dallas for some course for like six weeks. So assuming she passes it this time, basically what you are telling me is nowhere will accept her for residency and it is a waste of time.

Weeks...Caribbean schools are set up so their students have months to study for Step 1.

My girlfriend (no pics) just failed the 1st step exam. I don't know much about it, but I know she basically has to be picked by a hospital to do her rotations/residency, I don't know the difference between them. How will this effect her being selected by a hospital? How does the selection process work? She wants to be go to a hospital in New Orleans or Baton Rouge, what are her chances of this?
Would she be willing to move? My wife didn't do great on the step exams or the absite exams. She matched in general surgery and then did a fellowship at MGH (Man's Greatest Hospital). She can recover.
Which residency?

RUN THE frick AWAY. DON'T DO THIS TO YOURSELF. YOU'VE BEEN WARNED.
this coming from a guy who dated then married a girl through college, med school, and residency which finished in June. Don't walk, run away.

Backup question, since she went to med school can she just go be a nurse or start with nurse clinicals or whatever it is they do, or would she have to go to nursing school.

Good luck on the bar.
Seriously, see if she'll just quit. Sounds like shes blowing some serious $.

I would disagree with that. No one knows for sure if she gets accepted or not. I applaud her for being determined and not giving up.

There will always be places that will take a warm body that passes Step 1.

Dude....Caribbean student who failed Step 1 twice? She is done. And that is the most polite way to say it.
She needs to quit now so she can stop acquiring the debt which is about 3-4 times that of American schools.

Sounds like she's just piling up 100s of thousands of dollars in student debt that she will never be able to pay back.

A caribbean grad that failed step 1 twice? IMO yes.
I mean if she somehow honored all her rotations and killed step 2 i guess there's still a small chance of matching in bumfrick nowhere in family medicine - but given she's failed step 1 twice, it doesn't seem like testing is her strong suit.
I'm not going to tell anyone to give up on their dream, but the chips are weighted against her and that's a lot of debt to be gambling with.

Don't you have some MPT practice questions to do right now?

I know nothing about medical school or Step 1, but it seems pretty clear in this thread that she's done.

There are plenty of warm bodies now. Schools are opening up all over the place, residency spots aren't keeping up.

Well there seems to be many differing opinions on whether or not she is "done." I would never encourage her to quit and it's not my place to. If she needs to move off to get it done and work her way up I'm fine with that, whatever she feels like she needs to do.
