The question must be answered in a particular but fairly obvious way for me to be able to complete the joke. My second statement of it did embody a clue.

"Again, I ask of the OT, why is 100.4 considered the threshold? Why not 100.2, for example? Why not 100.6?"

Prob mono. My daughter had swollen lymph glands. Severe fatigue. Upper abdominal pain on her left. Told the doc we thought it was mono. They said she was 6 and too young.

3 weeks later another doc ran the long return ebv mojo test...

It's mono

Radio stations? I don't know, I can't figure out the way to respond. Dammit this will bother me too. Scruffy doesn't play games, but I like them.

My 12 yr old daughter has a low grade fever that doesnt break. Started with a sharp abdominal pain and now its a mild pain that radiates around stomach. Not centralized to one particular area. Very fatigued. What can it be? Her fever stays at 99.6

Step1: Go to hospital or call a real doctor's office and ask
Step2: Do what they say
Step3: ????
Step4: Go to hospital but don't post and drive

OP never came back so there are 3 ways this can be explained.
1. Troll
2. Found some compasion and brought the daughter he doesn't love to the Dr.
3. He trying to figure out how to explain to police that his daughter is dead due to his neglect all while looking for a place to hide his dog for when the cops do show up.

Just put out a nice donut spread and keep the dog outside.

Along the same lines, why is 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit considered normal? Why not 98.4? Why not 98.8?

Because of averages. I'm not sure what you're getting at here.

Warmer... That's the first half of the answer I'm hoping to get.

averages.

True for "normal" body temperature, but I think the threshold for "fever" was chosen in large part due to a nice property it has, a property that isn't exactly obvious when considering 100.4 vs 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit.

We are talking about Celsius. 36, 37, 38 etc.

98.6F is 37C. 100.4F is 38C.

Yep, a 1 degree C rise is 1.8 F. So 98.6 + 1.8 = 100.4.

As if Celsius is more precise than Fahrenheit. Really this is arbitrary but I do agree with the basic idea that 99.6 is too low to really be considered a fever.

Yep. And the coveted answer to "Why is 100.4 considered the threshold? Why not 100.2, for example? Why not 100.6?" is:

"Because of the metric system?"

Because then I would've gotten to reply, "Check out the big brain on so-and-so!"

I guess maybe you had to be there. Anyway, I believe the fever threshold was rounded up to 38 degrees Celsius largely out of convenience, as the upper limit of "normal" is reported to be somewhat less. Nice, round numbers, with 37 C normal and 38 C fever, a 1 degree difference, as opposed to the inscrutable 1.8 degree difference in Fahrenheit. OTOH, 37 C being normal temperature is probably just a happy coincidence, because it wouldn't be right to fudge that.

Damn! So once again, Scruffy is beaten by the damn metric system.

Honestly, that didn't even cross my mind. Now that I think about it, we use the metric system for everything but temperature. Never really noticed that before.
