California is testing an E Ink (think Amazon Kindle screen) wirelessly configurable license plate and if you're one of 24 lucky Sacramento residents (already questionable, because Sacramento), you can give the state $699 of your dollars plus $7 per month to have the privilege of being the first people to get one. You're probably yelling at your laptop now about that $699 price tag, and hey, we feel you on that. That's a chunk of change for a license plate, especially one that can track you but there are some possible uses for the plate that are kind of cool. We'll dig into those.

First of all, you'd never have to repurchase vehicle registration tags. The electronic plate would update automatically to show your current registration. This is mildly convenient for regular folks but super convenient for fleets. Gingerly applying stickers to dozens of cars seems like it would be a real time-suck. Finally, having a wirelessly configurable electronic plate lets it display localized warnings for road conditions or accidents. No more wondering why traffic is so slow because the guy in front of you's license plate is telling you what's what.

Nice, give the criminals one more thing to spoof so you can never trace them.

Traffic moves so fast on the Loop you'd never be able to read it.

At $699 I better be able to choose my background, go with Neopets today, or my license plate font as Times New Roman, go with cursive when i'm feeling really froggy.

Nah. At $700, I'm going Comic Sans all day long.

I also need to be able to change it to SNC BTCH at will.

That's what plate readers are for.

Will be awesome when someone smashes your digital plate for kicks and you're out 700 bones

One more way to frick with the average Joe, while the real need for focus is ignored.

Sometimes, the only thing left to do on the Titanic is rearrange the deck chairs.

I was searching for Comic Sans, I couldn't remember what it was though.

Leave it to a Skynet empathizer to know... So clever you machines are!

Have you seen this kid?

No, seriously. Have you seen him lately? Life's been rough for ole Eddie.

Yeah, this will end well.

Some script kiddie will figure out how to remotely wipe all the plate images from the screens then crash the system, meaning no license plates on these cars until the system comes back up.

And I seriously doubt the state of California ends it at a one time fee of $699. They’ll start adding new fees and surcharges left and right once people are locked into this tech.

Alright I'm sold! I'll buy 24 of them for my fleet of vehicles so I don't waste 10 minutes every 2 years gingerly putting stickers on my cars.

What an awful selling point.
