La Jolla Elementary School Principal Donna Tripi sent an email to parents Monday detailing an incident at a local business reported to her by a parent. On Wednesday she called the message a mistake and apologized.
Tripi’s email said the mother was at a store with her two children when “an African American male about 30 years old, about 6’ 1” – 6’ 12”, dressed in all black and a hooded sweatshirt” stared at her daughter.

quote:

“So now we the La Jolla Elementary School Community has been warned to be careful of black men that are 6 feet tall and wearing hoodies. That's inappropriate"

Two observations:

1) you can't do better than a full foot range in the height of the suspect?

2) 6'12" AKA 7 feet.
ETA: I see these are your typos. Damn!

Meh, tough call on this one....
The parent got uncomfortable bc a person she didn’t like the look of was near her, and then told her school principal?

I don’t think the principal was trying to be racist but, I mean, kinda was racist by the lady who left the store right?

Hard to say here if the actual incident was a legit threat or if just some anxious bitch projecting her issues. Principal could have just sent a safety reminder - description was probably unnecessary since nothing happened. No need to play into someone else’s drama.

To be clear, I think withholding the description of a perp’s race is idiotic.

Seems strange and needs more context. Is the business right next to the school? That might make more sense to give a good description of the guy in case he’s hanging around looking for school girls.

If this was just some random business, then the racial description wasn’t necessary.

A true LaJolla resident would have written-

“That cat is a bad one
That cat with the hood
Don’t you let him come here
Don’t you let him come near
Your know what he did
The last time he was here.”

I agree. Hard to make a conclusion without more context.

La Jolla is an affluent seaside area in San Diego.

This didn't come from Atlanta or Montgomery where black people are 40% of the population.

Identifying the subject as black is highly appropriate in this geographic instance.

Principal shouldn’t have done anything IMO

Did the Mom feel so threatened that she called the police?
More than likely she was being an attention whore & the dumbass Principal believed her.

I think people are being a bit extreme flipping out just because a black person walks past them

I am confused as to why a parent would report that to the principal of the school their child attends.

If I had a kid and we were out and about and something happened, the last thing I would think of is "I better go to school tomorrow to let the principal know, although this has nothing to do with school".

Once that happened, I am trying to figure out why the principal would think sending this out is a good idea. Knowing how people react, every time parents take their kids out somewhere in public, if they see a black dude around 6'1" accidently glances their way, they will be calling police.

Inform the establishment, maybe even other places around that place. If there is an on duty police around, maybe let them know.. Don't go tell the fricking principal.

My question is if this business was right near the school where the incident occurred

The mother had no reason to worry. It was just Kenneth Winslow Jr. looking for his red dog Clifford.

So would people be upset if black was replaced with white in describing the suspect?

No they wouldn’t.

It's always appropriate when you are warning of a specific individual as compared to describing a type of person to be wary of.

It's very obvious to anyone with half a brain that the principal was trying to describe a specific individual so that people could be aware.

When did this principal decide she was a self-defense expert?
