Yes, as well as act as a source of revenue for the jail/sheriff.
You are definitely here to cause rage

Maybe not a disaster but it's caused more problems than helping. Apparently live video calls with their family on the tablets is coming soon for the feds. That could be the disaster.

It's not 100% clear from the article if the prisoners are actually allowed to use Facebook and similar websites, but apparently some of the prisoners are going on sites like Facebook even if it's nominally forbidden. Some of them are even using their tablets for porn.
And honestly, I can't really blame the prisoners for defying the restrictions once they're given the IPad. They're in prison, which is miserable and boring. Of course they'll disobey the restrictions when they're given some access to the outside world.
The real blame here is on the state of California, for giving them the tablets in the first place.

What are you talking about?
Nothing I said is untruthful. Using the tablets here costs money. It's like the phone/video systems the jail uses. They print money for the sheriff's office.
Why do you interpret me informing people of what's going on as "causing rage"?

Most jails and prisons have tablets now. Not full blown iPads tho. Whats wild is how many inmates have cellphones.

You know exactly what it means and why you do it

Why do prisoners get iPads? Prison isn’t supposed to be pleasant.
Should be given Etch a sketch's

Even if there is a program for prisoners to have tablets, who thought it was a good idea to give them internet access? It seems like the tablets should come with pre-downloaded apps that can be used without the internet. Maybe allow the inmate to have movies or something downloaded to the tablet by prison staff. It just sounds like they’re given relatively unlimited internet access which seems like a really bad idea.

Well the internet access is needed for things like using a library, messaging, documents, etc.
Now, having no or loose restrictions on the internet? Yeah that seems to be an issue California is having.

I think its an awful idea to let inmates have unfettered access to the internet.
The iPads will all be destroyed in a few months anyway.

At first I rolled my eyes at the thought of $189M wasted on iPads for prisoners.
Then as I read they actually had WiFi access I became enraged. What the frick is wrong with California?!

You’re definitely always in the running for downvotes, congrats on that.
