Buzzfeed “the Pandemic is NOT your vacation”

“Wealth is the vector.” That’s what sociologist Tressie McMillan Cottom tweeted last week, in reference to the spread of COVID-19 across both the globe and the United States. Wealth is not the cause of every concentrated outbreak dotting the United States. But it’s the common denominator of so much of its spread outside of major urban areas. It’s the reason why so many of the coronavirus hot spots in the Mountain West — Sun Valley, Idaho; Gunnison County, Colorado; Summit County, Utah; Gallatin County, Montana — overlap with winter playgrounds for the wealthy. The virus travels via people, and the people who travel the most, both domestically and internationally, are rich people.
Buzzfeed: “ rich people quit gentrifying rural America”.
All over the United States, people are fleeing urban areas with high infection rates for the perceived safety and natural beauty of rural areas. Some of them own second homes in those areas; others are paying upwards of $10,000 a month, depending on the area, for temporary housing. The common denominator among those populations is, again, wealth — either their own or their families’. They can flee the city because their jobs can be done remotely, or they don’t work at all. They either had a vacation house already, or they can afford to fork over what amounts to a second rent, or second mortgage.

So what I’m reading is that I should go frick myself if I actually went out, earned money, and then used that money to buy something? Nice

I don’t care what people do to get away from this mess, and the virtue signals from these pampered pus-sacks who write for these rags aren’t going to convince anyone to the contrary.
It’s like these people don’t live in reality.
ETA: and actually, this is my vacation. Going from 60-70 hour weeks to
40 gives me more time at home with my kids. Weekends off. Time to play in the garden, time to go fishing. Time to live a little more and work a little less. So screw this twat.

When did Crested Butte become a playground for the wealthy? It's just about the only traditional ski town that's left in CO.

While her lecturing is annoying she is right about the fact that "wealthy" people traveling is why COVID-19 spread so fast around the country.
WA resident visits China, brings Wuhan Flu home with him. US patient zero.
Most all of the initial cases in every state were because someone traveled to NYC, Italy, or China/Asia
Mardi Gras tourists from around the country and world bringing it to New Orleans.
People on ski trips bringing it to CO, they had dozens of cases in the ski towns before it gained traction in Denver.
And now thousands of people from NYC fleeing to FL and the north east states.

Oh boy, that won't be well received.
You're right tough.

I think the main point is who gives a shite? We know wealthy people travel more. Before any sort of national emergency was declared were they supposed to stop traveling? And it's not like just the wealthy travels. Pretty much everyone other than the completely impoverished has been on some sort of out of town vacation in their lives.

This country has always had two sets of rules—one for the rich and another for everyone else. If you’re rich, you get a Covid test. If you’re rich, you don’t have to pay income taxes. If you’re rich, you get out of a speeding ticket. They think rules are for schmucks.

Well, that's certainly not how it works.

People that never made anything of themselves or made bad choices always want to blame someone else for their problems.
It’s such a BS victim mentality

And how many of these major cities would be all but worthless without tourism? NOLA without the tourist aspect of the economy would be broken.

All these service industry people and related fields out of work...the ones that are virtue signaling for them don’t get that they depend on many of the people buzzfeed is trying to shame to survive.

Wait, only wealthy people travel? So all those people I saw at Mardi Gras were rich? Damn. Could have fooled me.
I agree that travel in general is why this spread. That is fairly obvious. But to say it just because of “wealthy” people traveling is not true

I think many of them get it
Most people aren't stupid enough to deny what fills their wallets
A lot of service industry people may be left wing but they don't want these shut downs to go on indefinitely because they're some of the most impacted people

It’s the...handlers, influencers, I don’t really know what to call it, that don’t grasp what life is really like. These “journalists”, bloggers, patreon whores that think their opinion is so invaluable that they really understand the plight of the working class.
So they have to virtue signal. Like the celebrities singing “imagine” with no makeup from their millionaire mansions.

Screw them. I am headed for the lake house in a couple of hours.

Too funny. Crested Butte ain’t been anything but a haven for the wealthy for a long time.
