Why would they sell something you paid for?

Exactly. But I’m not 100% sure, hence the question.

If you buy the seats, how would they know you aren't using them until the flight is backing away?

Unfortunately this doesn’t work. They will upgrade the other passengers to fill the seats with passengers who didn’t check in.

And you can only check in once.

Quit the doozy you have here, Paul. Unfortunately I have not flown commercial since a wee lad. Let me ask my former pilot, who now manages a Delta fleet, and I’ll gwt back to you.

They will sell it. I have had two tickets before and put one next to the seat I planned to use. They wouldn’t let me check both seats in, so it looked like I missed the flight and they sold it to someone else.

Don't you have to check-in for the flight within a certain amount of time before the scheduled departure and if you fail to do that, they can release your seat and sell it to someone else? I don't know how that would work for multiple seats if you try to check-in online.

Also, if Paul were anything more than a dirt peasant, he'd know that you contact the airline directly to buy out an entire section and ensure you have the entire section not subject to resale, not buy individual tickets online and hope for the best.
