But so far nobody and I mean NOBODY in 12 pages has cited a single study saying retreads are bad.
Correct, while numerous have been posted saying the opposite.

Numerous studies funded by the retread industry.

Your never having a warranty "come into play" is as baseless an argument as folks saying they see tire scraps on the side of the road.
If the retreads you bought are as reliable as the reports you guys posted claim, why don't they give you a warranty? The truck and plane retreaded tires that Shrubber posted had warranties.
I've bought a used motor and a rebuilt transmission for an old car, but I don't think I'd ever buy tires with no warranty.

please cite one single study that backs this up.
Go on.
I'll wait.
It's called logic. How often do you replace tires? Me personally, every 4 to 5 years. Assuming I drive the same 4Runner as you, I could have bought brand new, highly rated, Firestone Winterforce UV's for $99.10/tire. So I could buy 4 tires and have them installed with tax for ~$450.00 and have a 5 year warranty on them as well.
vs.
Paying $375 for 4 recapped tires with 0 warranty.
So...had I done what you did, I would have saved ~$19/year with no warranty to show for it and knowing I'm riding on a tire that is 2 to 5+ years old but has been recapped and expecting it to carry me safely for 4 years. Is that really worth it? Any logical and rational person would say not at all.

Everyday you get in your car you'll wonder about those shite tires you're driving on. Hope that measly amount of money you saved is worth your peace of mind.

400 Billion (with a B!) gallons of oil! ....saved (how does it save oil? just from the reduced production of new tires?) ... annually! .... in North America (not even worldwide) !
you don't know how tires are made do you?
And you suck at maths, that number is hyper inflated, unless you are honestly trying to suggest that roughly 30% of the worlds oil production is being consumed by the US tire market.
For example 2016 production SHOULD be 35,000,000,000 Bbls / 42 g/Bbl =1,470,000,000,000 or 1.47 trillion USG or somewhere pretty close to that.

I once discussed retreads with a long haul trucker.
I was complaining about the tire parts in the road.
He said that if the retread was going to fail it would do so sooner rather than later. He said if the tire made it past 5,000 miles that it would run for years.

It took me a while, but I found a website that had an opinion on retreads and didn't sell them.
LINK
quote:
Is Retreading Tires Just as Effective as Buying New Tires?
Retreading tires depends on the condition of the base tire or carcass of the tire. Retreading tires is used by the heavy-haul trucking industry to keep its costs down, as heavy-haul tires are made of stronger materials - sidewalls, plies - and lend themselves to retreading. Some retreads for cars are good, but you will find they wear out in about half the time of a new tire. Retreading tires are also not recommended if you are using your vehicle in extreme conditions such as long-distance, high-speed, high-heat driving. Retreads make sense only in light-duty service where the cost of a new tire cannot be justified.

That page is chock full of facts. Why the references he cites in sharing his opinion are impeccable.
The lone comment (sure the author is too busy to respond to)

for what reason would a retread last only half as long?
Blogger is clearly smarter than the NHTSA

This thread needs to be taken out back and shot.

I don't know about retreaded tires. I've always thought that there are 2 things you definitely don't skimp on when it comes to money. Tires and mattresses. You put your life in the hands of one and you spend 1/3 of your life on the other.
Posted on 1/29/16 at 7:01 am to CAD703X
It's not a very smart idea. Never take a chance and gamble with your life on re-treads. ALWAYS buy new tires.

Well, since you clearly admit that page has correct info, explain this nugget:
quote:
But in heavy-duty use, such as in cab or limousine use, it is better to purchase new tires and let your tire dealer dispose of your old tires properly.
If new tires are better for cars that drive a lot, why would you want to put them on your personal car?

LOL wut? You're repeating that bloggers opinion like that makes it valid.
