I see trucks and cars with for sale signs in front of peoples houses, like in the front yard. Anyone ever buy, or sell like that? Seems like if they keep up their yard and house it would give an indication of how they maintained the vehicle.

I bought my first vehicle (96 Mustang GT) from a random person's yard I passed.
He let me test drive and take it to my mechanic to check it out
I also sold it the same way
You'll make more money selling it outright instead of a trade with a dealer, at least back in the early 2000s this was true

They are usually better deals. No salesman bs, and if it's for sale out in front of their double wide you know they are under water on it. Just take over the payments...

Only if it was parked in the neutral ground.

That's how my dad bought my first truck for me when I was in High School.

Yep.

Bought my kids first car from the side of the road. All the warning signs were there, it was a Jeep Grand Cherokee (supposed POS), and a fella was selling it for a man. The car was super clean and a decent price. Bought it and she drove it for years, nearly trouble-free. I sold it a couple of years back and I still see it around town. I still text with the guy who sold it to me and he’s helped me a few times with some random crap.

I bought my second kid a car from a guy that I worked with. He was meticulous and he maintained the crap out of the car. It ended up being an enormous POS, so much so, that I couldn't stand to sell it to anyone and had to trade it in after I spend thousands to repair.

It's a crapshoot sometimes.

They’re probably far less slimy to deal with than the stealership

The benefit of the trade-in is that you don’t have to pay tax on the amount of the traded vehicle. So you would generally need to sell a $20K trade-in for at least $22K just to come out even.

Preferred way to purchase a used vehicle. You can speak directly to the owner who knows some history on that vehicle. Seek out by owner vehicle that has a documented maintenance history.
You aren't getting that from Joe Bob on a used car lot.

I sold a 4runner in college out of the Wal Mart parking lot about 20 years ago.

The dude who bought it, totaled it before registering the vehicle by wrapping it around a light post on Perkins. So, naturally, I had to deal with that. I think all I had to do was show the bill of sale to the DMV or something.

88 Cressida - moms car, bought in 92. rear ended and pushed into another car, sold in 06. Was used as the trainer/spare car when my siblings first drove

92 (I think) trailblazer - bought in 96 used for 8 years, sold when we bought the frontier

94 4runner - bought and became mom's car in 00

94 accord - Brothers first car in 01, sold in 09

00 accord - sisters first car 03, sold in 11

02 frontier - bought in 04 after they got rid of the trailblazer

Were all used cars we found on the side of someone's yard or the classified section in the paper.. Good old days indeed.

Bought a 2008 Honda CRV off the side of the road for my kid.

I was able to use the zip ties keeping the bumper straight which you only saw if you looked under the vehicle to bring down his asking price.

5yrs later the zip ties are still there with no issues on the vehicle.

I assume it’s probably not theirs and someone is private selling it and using that location. I had a family member who did this, he lived on a main road and he’d let his friends or whoever let them park it for exposure.

How exactly is the sale done? Do you have to go with the seller to a title place or the DMV?

Got my tacoma from the side the road in texas.

Some farmer was selling it for his son while he was overseas. He literally had just parked it when I saw him getting out and putting the sign up. Easiest purchase ever. He even held it for me so I could fly back and scoop it up a week later

In the case I was talking about, I went to the guy's bank with him. I wrote a check for the balance of the loan and the bank signed the title over to me. The bank did a bill of sale. I then took the paperwork to the DMV and paid the taxes.

New title showed up in the mail a week later.
