How much they charging? I literally just sat my happy arse at the DMV for 2 hours last week registering a car I bought in Texas.

Unless I misunderstood, the girl I talked to said $40. I figure it's worth it after looking at one of those DMV forms and figuring I'd have to do it all over if I fill the shite out incorrectly.

I would pay $40 to avoid that crap again.

Great thread here. I'm about to be in this exact situation. Prob not paying cash - what would you recommend re financing? Lining it up first? If so, how - if you don't know what the total cost will be? What are the interest rates? Any tips - thanks.

FWIW, checkout Lightstream, myautoloan.com, cars.com, and bankofamerica.com. They all have rate calculators and rate schedules and info regarding the process.
I didn't like the rate the dealer offered. Went online and got a 1.5 better rate than the dealer offered. Downside is I have to handle TTL on my own. But I'm saving about $800 in interest so it's worth it IMO.
If you go in preapproved you supposedly have better negotiating power. I have pretty damn good credit and that seems to have been my biggest asset .
Obviously you'll have some sort of budget in mind, so see what your rates/term/payments are for the max and work backwards from there. Figure 10% on TTL in Louisiana and your safe. DMV website has good info on all that BS.

Yeah, I bought a car in Houston last march as a Baton Rouge resident. Everything is handled as usual, only you have to pay your states tax. So the 9% instead of texas' like 6-7. So that will sting. But what you'll save in the Houston market will more than make up.

I just bought my truck in tX about a month ago. If I would've financed it they would've included my LA sales tax rate and handling all the registration in LA for me. I paid cash for the truck so I just paid asking price and they FedEx'd me all the paperwork a week or so later that I took to the DMV here and paid my taxes and registered it.
I've bought three vehicles in TX and paid cash. The first two were like you stated, drive off and then pay tax in LA when you register the vehicle. The most recent purchase was different, maybe because it was a new vehicle, but the dealer required the LA tax to be paid at the time of purchase and they used 3rd party service to handle all the TTL. It all worked out fine. Their explanation was that their were too many purchases being made where the buyer would not register the vehicle in LA and then the state was trying to make the dealer pay.
I would be prepared to cover the LA taxes at the time of purchase if you are going through a large dealership.

I bought my car in Salt Lake City when I lived in Iowa. I paid the taxes when I registered it in Iowa.

I have bought three vehicles in Houston and live in LA. The process was simplicity in itself. I bought all of them from Mac Haik in Houston. We negotiated a price online then I sent my paperwork over. We drove over, test drove the vehicle, signed the paperwork and were out in an hour. We financed through them as they actually had a better rate than my bank. They handles all of the filing and registering. I got my LA plates in the mail about a month later. We saved a very signifiacnt amount over the best deal I found in LA.

drove to Houston from BR to buy a car a couple months ago. was surprisingly easy.
still paid the 10% tax ofc
but the cars are cheaper in Texas. dealer handled registration and mailing me the plate. im sure I paid a premium for it. but frick it, it was easy.
I would recommend anyone at least look at the texas markets before buying a car in BR. for a 5 hour drive and maybe a $75 hotel room , you can save >$1,000 , most likely

I bought a bike at Honda of Brookhaven and didn't pay a penny in tax in MS. Had to pay the taxes at the LA DMV.

Just bought a car last week from Sterling Mccall and they handled everything. You pay the taxes based on the address on your drivers license. They will Fedex the plates and registration when they get it in about a month. Super easy

once a month here, you're going to pay the tax one way or another and the dealer can take care of bidness in your state if it's an out of state deal
